The Dreaded Visit to the Periodontist

Thursday, December 17, 2009

For the past few years, I have been seeing a periodontist every six months as I have a problem with my gums receding. I think it is a pretty common problem as you get older and I had braces when I was younger which also can be a risk factor and cause later gum problems. Earlier this year, at the recommendation of the hygenist I started using a water pick once or twice a day. She told me that this is the one best habit I could do for my dental health and that it is better than flossing. Since I wasn't real keen on the downward trend I was seeing.... I decided to give it a try. I bought one of those counter top water pick units and started using it on the most gentle setting. After the first check-up about 6 months ago, there was noticeable improvement and much less gum bleeding. Now after the second check-up... there has been further improvement! They mentioned that it may not improve any further from this point but the situation is stable and satisfactory. Woo Hoo! I'm really clicking my heels that this simple procedure has made such a big change. It doesn't take more than a minute a day and it is so much easier (but more effective) than flossing. I would highly recommend a water pik to anyone and wish I would have started using it years ago. Of course, there are a number of things I wish I would have started doing years ago LOL! Anyway, it is never too late to get started. They also took my blood pressure and it came in at 117/71 so that looks good too.

I'm still pretty worn out and tired with the cold still hanging on. I did a 5 mile walking DVD this afternoon and hope to get back to the gym next week.

Have a great day spark friends! I'm always delighted to hear from you.

Hugs,
Rhonda

I used a water pic when I had braces a few years back and found a HUGE difference with the gum issue (and cavities). I'm glad it is helping you too. I had a 6 month problem or so with my gums and know how frustrating it can be!

I've had a water pick for more then 30 years. They are GREAT and really haven't changed that much over the years. I give them a big thumbs up.

Hope you get to felling 100% soon so you can have a great Christmas. Since you did a 5 mile walking DVD I think you will be back in the gym soon.

Hi Rhonda- I also have periodontal disease and have had great reports the last few visits. My sister is a dental hygienist and recommend the Rota Dent system to me a few years ago and it works. No more scaling of gums for me!
    Have a wonderful day!

Good information and a very convincing testimonial on your part. If I hadn't just sworn that I am DONE shopping for Christmas presents for this year, I would get one for each of my grown children. Now I know what to get them for next year! Nobody wants to have to go to the periodontist!
