A death at work

Monday, February 22, 2010

A man who works in my office, just two years older than me - he was 51, died last night of a heart attack. He left behind 5 children age 18 and under. He had several health issues, including being over weight, high blood pressure and some heart problems I believe. But to die that young and suddenly - it was a shock to everyone, especially I am sure to his family and my heart goes out to his children.

It's a reminder for me that this journey I am on isn't just about fitting into size 8 jeans- and staying there - but it's so I don't develop things like high blood pressure and diabetes - two conditions I was steamrolling toward a year and a half ago, and so that I live as long and as healthy a life as possible. It's literally a matter of life and death, somthing I sometimes forget while I am groaning over facing another workout or grumbling as I pass up the chocolate cake. Even though my children are older than his, I still want to be there for them - and for my granchildren. 51 is way too young to say goodbye.

It is always sad when children lose their parent untimely. The wakeup calls are out there but it took too many factors to occur for me to accept the reality and start toward a healthier lifestyle.

I am 52 and had a friend die a couple of weeks ago-he was 51. I think it was heart disease. I have already had open heart surgery (4 bypasses) and I am not ready to die yet either! This is what happens when you wait too long to start trying to take care of yourself! emoticon

You are right, the jeans are a nice side benefit - the real reason is our HEALTH!
