My First Hike in Years - It Was Tough But I Made It

Sunday, July 04, 2010

I hadn't hiked in many, many years but when I was invited to go on a hike recently, after some initial hesitation, I said yes. While I kind of stressd out over it a little last night, I just didn't want to slow the group down because I couldn't keep up. I just wanted to finish the hike, even if I was last.

The hike was a hike up Mt. McCoy and onto to the Reagan Library that was nearly 3.5 miles long. I know that doesn't sound like much but the hike was considered a moderate hike and it was a steep climb for the first half of the walk where I struggled to keep up.

I thought my 4mi walks up and around my neighborhood would be good practice but they weren't. They didn't prepare me for the hike up the mountain. If there was one thing I learned today it was that I need a lot more practice building up my strength and stamina.

I want to do the next hike (the group has an easy hike scheduled in a couple of weeks) and hopefully a few more weeks of building up my strength and stamina will serve me a little better.

It was a good day and I'm glad I went even if I am really sore now. It was good that I stepped out of my comfort zone (of just walking my neighborhood) and put myself out there to try something new as well as meet some new people.

One good thing though, after tracking my fitness for the day, I have banked some extra calories for tomorrow. I'm going to a BBQ and as long as I make some healthy choices, I should be able to indulge just a little - I promise not a lot, just a little.

Have a wonderful 4th of July everyone.

GREAT job on the hike! That is something I really want to get back into, but I'll likely wait until the fall to do so (too stinkin' hot and muggy here in NC!).

Brandyceliz81 - Thx for the support; I really appreciate it. This is one of the best things that I like about SP - all the encouragement from the other members.

Calilindi - The group is the Simi Valley Trailblazers and they organize hikes all over the place. It actually was another SP member that told me about the group Their website is http://www.simitrailblazers.com/>
I'm glad I went because I did enjoy myself even if I am still sore. They were a great bunch of people and really fun to hang out with. I will definitely be making the next local hike (their hiking up in Glacier Park for the two weeks) on July 31st.

Teriana - Exercise is a vital aspect of my efforts to getting healthier. I have no illusions that diet alone will help me succeed my goals - I have to exercise.

Now, having said that, I learned that after years of not exercising I have to build up my strength and stamina slowing. It's two days later and I'm still sore.

I wasn't prepared for the hike and it was just a liitle ambitious of me. I'm not going to give up, I'm just going to be a little more realistic about my abilities.

Congrats on putting yourself out there! I am also in the Simi area and would love to have a hiking partner/group. I love to hike and don't really have anyone close by. Was it SPARK people that you hiked with?

Exercise is so much easier when we can get outdoors and have some fun!

    Any info. would be appreciated!

Great job! I think I will push myself a bit more on the exercise side of things. Today makes 4 weeks on SP and I did not lose a pound last week. Disappointing yes, but I am not "giving up" as I have in the past. I will follow your example and do more physically than I have been doing. You are a champion!

Xena1956 - If you know Simi Valley, then you know the area around the Ronald Reagan library is really hilly. It was a strenuous hike for me even though the group said it was a moderate hike (moderate for them maybe).

Everyone was really nice and when they found out it was my first hike in a long time, I noticed that some of them paid a little more attention to me; asking me if I was ok and generally just making sure I knew to pace myself and hanging out at the back of the group with me.

They were really nice and encouraged me to come back in a few weeks to join them on an easier hike up in Carpenteria, in Santa Barbara county.

I am so glad that you tried a hike. They are fun. I have done a few of them too. I know exactly where you hiked and for those not familiar with the area, it is not all that easy. If I get up to Simi this summer I wish I could get together with you.
