Motivation from Within

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Well, I've passed day 21 of my exercise and tracking and they are now part of my everyday activity. Tracking my nutrition works best if I can track before I eat as I then can plan my choices and measure specific amounts.

During this process I have learned more about motivation! It comes from within. Wanting something is in and of itself motivation. Making the choice to make it happen is active motivation. I want to lose weight and I want to be as fit as possible. Therefore choosing to track nutrition and exercise daily is putting me firmly in the path of active motivation.

I've got it! By jove, I think I've got it! Amazing how long it took for me to discover the reality of personal motivation. Its cool.

Wow, I will have to look for the book CarolJean recommends in her post below and share it with my daughters who are just starting their families. She is so right and you have found that and shared it so well here Vicki. Keep on track with your inspiring blogs and look how you have been an inspiration to others. Carry that with you daily to help you battle the many UPS and downs we all face on those mundane days when our will power is low. Go back and read these responses to your blogs when you feel like you are slipping into the no will power zone!!!! It will surely lift you up and put you back on track!

You had a WooHoo moment!! Once I started carefully tracking my food every day I've done so much better--losing weight again! As far as tracking exercise--I've got to do it first!! I just joined the 10 minute a day Exercise Challenge Team. To begin exercising again, after all these years, it should be a good way to start!!

Vicki, you have discovered a truth that some never experience. In the educational field there is an author named Alfie Kohn who published a book called "Punished by Rewards." He believes that always striving for extrinsic motivation - gold stars, grades, test scores, etc. keeps students from developing intrinsic motivation which it the only kind that really works and is long lasting.

Nobody can motivate you like you--but I still find a lot of encouragement by reading the blogs of others--especially those who have overcome great odds. Sometimes that is enough to kickstart my own motivation!
