On the Road, again

Saturday, April 09, 2011

I didn't think I was going to get a ride in today. It started out cold and rainy, and I don't do cold and rainy. But, the rain cleared off and the afternoon was wonderful. So since the weather decided to cooperate, I got the bike out.

This was actually the first ride I've had since I was diagnosed with an arthritic hip. I wasn't sure how that was going to affect things, so I told Mrs. BlueAndGold to keep her phone nearby: I'd call her if my leg fell off! I decided to keep to my usual training ride, so there wouldn't be a lot of climbing to add to the unknown strain on my hip. I was able to complete the 16 mile loop, and I did it in under 65 minutes, nearly 8 minutes quicker than I did it last month, before the arthritic hip!!!

Overall, the ride wasn't too bad on my hip: it did start to tighten up about 3/4 of the way through, but I didn't give up and call my wife! Right now, it's tightened up, but that's from tired muscles, not so much the arthritis.

So, I've now been diagnosed with a bad thyroid, a bad heart and a bad hip: Am I 48 or 84???

You are as young as you let yourself be! Congrats on completing that ride. I get sore achey hips and toes and think that I, too, have arthritis. Have you tried foam rollers? I am seriously thinking about getting one (I use the one at the gym) to help stretch my IT band, quads...and generally get those inflexible hip flexors more flexible. All the best to you.

Don't get discouraged. The things you are doing will help! That's why you're doing them !!
