Laughing at My Old Self

Friday, September 16, 2011

Tonight I went to dinner. I ordered the grilled chicken and mashed potatoes hold the gravy please and a glass of water( why waste calories on fruity drinks with no actual fruit in it.) The meal came with a trip to the salad and fruit bar. As I got my salad with the spinach and not the iceberg, I reminisced on how I used to love the buffet and always wanted my moneys worth. I thought that I was making a healthy choice by starting with the salad and ending with the fruit. Although what I was having in between was three helpings of fried chicken, mac & cheese, the list goes on. Not to mention that "good" salad was drenched in dressing. I thought the buffet was the greatest thing ever thought of. I wanted to kiss the person who invented the buffet line. It looks like a Conga line sometimes. And I was once at the front of the line leading the way, It was a party and the DJ was the cook in the back, playing such tunes as fat and cholesterol and a lb of sugar. Oh how foolish of me. I smiled as I walked back to my seat laughing at the old me. and you know what, I don't have to restrain myself from walking past the buffet for fear of temptation. I am not tempted by the nonsense. If only I had the power to gaze at the people around me and cast a spell over them that makes them walk away from that conga line. I'm hanging up my party hat folks.

Great blog--thanks for sharing. I think (hope) we can all identify with you here. Thanks to Spark, we're all changing how we think about food.

Funny! I think we all see ourselves here. The buffet is really a cruel trick on us all. The food, half the time, was not anything I would normally order off a menu; but I felt compelled to try nonetheless.

Oh you have said it more eloquently than I ever could! Thanks!! It feels so good to be in charge of our choices.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this! Hope your doing well.

I still do the buffet at times (Chinese), but I usually head for the boiled shrimp, the sushi and the seafood to "get my money's worth" then add in some fresh fruit at the end. Every now and then, I splurge and get a VERY small serving of the soft serve ice cream. Overall, I think I've learned how to choose the healthier options when needed.

emoticon lol Have we ever all been there and done that! Thank God we are learning and gaining better eating habits. I used to think I had to get my monies worth and forgot it also got me more pounds worth right where I didn't need it.
Today I try to think of it as well I will be able to enjoy this another time and I don't need to overeat today like I was never eating again. emoticon

I like your blog! It's funny how we change. These days when I see a buffet, I feel full just looking at the "massiveness" of it all. It just seems so greedy, and almost sinful, when I used to stuff myself to point of illness.

This is a great blog - I know what you mean. The Chinese buffet used to be my downfall - I used to complain about how the plates should be larger so I didn't have to make so many darned trips back for 2nds and 3rds. I used to convince myself that I had to try everything on the buffet too. Oh how attitudes change.
