My Cat has the Spark!

Saturday, February 04, 2012

Well, it looks like everyone in my house gained weight last year. My cat who was once the runt of the litter, has to lose four pounds. My vet, who I love, advised told Rusty’s getting FAT. No more free-feeding. No more open bowls of food. Now, I don’t free feed but I DO have a hi-tech automatic feeder that doles out precise portions for breakfast and dinner on autopilot...for infinity. With one tiny problem.

Just like a bunch of teenagers left alone with a vending machine, my cats have put their feline heads together to outwit this piece of technology. They’ve learned if they simply insert their paw at just the right angle...FREE SNACK TIME! My high tech machine is really just my cat's big bowl of Cheetos.

Well there’s no such thing as a free lunch anymore.

My cats are taking their tips from SparkPeople and on a diet too. There is no more dry food because well, like many on a diet, they have to limit their carbs.
So, they are on what my friend calls,”the CATkins diet.” No empty carbs, just quality high protein wet cat food. Dr. Atkins would be proud.

I also have to offer “healthy snacks.” I did not know that cats enjoy fresh greens in the form of alfalfa and certain grasses. So, I am growing them fresh kitty greens. Certifiably organic...and they love them. This city girl is going green.

I want this to work for them so they don’t get the feline versions of human diseases like diabetes and joint issues. And it's helping me stay on track.

Finally, between the extra toys and catnip I’ve bought, they are being more active so maybe I should start tracking their fitness minutes? Now, if I could only teach them to use their paw to spin the Spark wheel everyday? emoticon

Here's Spike giving it his best shot but it's a little blurry.

Well, now that I’ve watered the kitty grass, I have to go and earn my own Spark fitness minutes. Have a great weekend and Keep the Spark!

Love this!!! I adopted mine when she was nearly, but not quite, ready to leave the litter. BUT, 12 years later we're all doing fine LOL! She's the only cat I've ever had who maintains a healthy weight on her own. She's always had free-feeding and stays within a half pound range ALWAYS....even at age 12. I could learn something!!

Your cats are beauties!! Good luck at establishing the upper hand on nutrition. I know they can nag like the best of them!

You are more than welcome to for comments. We tend to find the babies that need help. When my daughter was going to school, she and I found HER baby litterally on the side of the road. She saw him... he was soo small I dindt see him. He was even smaller than mine... aka I call him Midget.. she calls him BOB. He's now the biggest cat I've seen... he's heavy compaired to mine. There is something very special about takin care of the wee takes a very special person. makes me luv u that much more! (g)

been trying to get my two indoor cats to 'diet'. their previous owners never fed them much, one of them was even just barely rescued from starvation. and now? pigs, both of them. sunshine is all of 9.5 kgs, that is well over 20 lbs. whenever i ration out their food, try to keep it to about 200 g. per cat per day, it doesn't take long for them to yo-yo. they can put away double that, esp. in cold weather.
which i fully understand... my appetite is way up, too!

This makes me giggle.. that the kittykids have outsmarted the high tech kitty food machine! Mine seem most happy when you give them a bunch of empty boxes! of course, I will warn you. When growing those greens.. be ready for dirty on the carpet. Meaning mine pulled the grass outa the pot and strew dirt all over the place. They were purrrfectly happy with themselves. Of course, mine also like to cover up their food bowls with the blankies too. I havent figured that one out either.. They are littermates who's momma died when they were itty bitty... so they think Im the momma... cuz I bottle fed them all. when all else fails.. play with the cat.. he gets exercise and you get to laugh alot. LOL

Loved your blog! A year ago, we inherited a hugely overweight and very unhappy cat -- we put her on strict portion control and one year later she looks totally normal, is able to jump up on the bed, and purrs all the time! Now if only someone could put ME on strict portion control! emoticon

HAHAHA! Thank you VERY much for the laughs today. What cute kitties you have! I have a flame-point Siamese. I love him, but he's a curmudgeon and only likes to snuggle in the winter, when it's cold.

I have a 20 lb tom cat that ISN'T fat, but I'm really glad we got a hyperactive little sister to help keep him active. My husband recently bought a Ronco Pocket Fisherman to entertain them--he's currently "cat fishing" in the living room! I've actually seen a kitty treadmill on Animal planet--it's like a big hamster wheel. Apparently some cats go for it, but I think most cats would think, "What's the point of that? Running and not getting anywhere? Only people are that dumb!" Good for you for setting a good example for your feline friends. No Flabby Tabbys! emoticon
