THE SABOTEURS...

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN YOU PROCLAIM TO EVERYONE THAT YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT, YOU HAVE TO DEFEND YOUR DECISION TO DO IT??? I RECENTLY TRANSITIONED BACK TO MY HOME STATE (CALIFORNIA). I'M NOW NEAR ENOUGH TO FAMILY THAT WE CAN PARTICIPATE IN FUNCTIONS TOGETHER ON A REGULAR BASIS... YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT FAMILY DOES.

THAT BEING SAID...

WHY IS IT THAT, WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE OF MY WEIGHT LOSS GOALS, YOU MUST INVITE ME TO PARTIES, BARBEQUES, AND THE LIKE WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT I'LL EAT WHAT YOU'VE PREPARED. I MEAN I WOULDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM ATTENDING IF YOU'D SIMPLY STOP HARASSING ME ABOUT MY DIET.

WHY INVITE ME IF YOU'RE JUST GOING TO CRITICIZE THE SNACKS THAT I BROUGHT WITH ME TO HOLD ME OVER? I DIDN'T DRIVE 45 MINUTES TO BE PRESSURED INTO DOING THE WRONG THING. I'M NOT GOING TO BE MADE TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT NOT EATING ALL OF THOSE CALORIES, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, I'LL HAVE TO WORK THEM OFF, NOT YOU.

IT'S ALMOST LIKE YOU SECRETLY WANT TO SEE ME FAIL. I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHEN MY CONCERN ABOUT MY HEALTH BECAME OFFENSIVE TO EVERYONE. YOU WOULD THINK, WITH THE WAY THE GAGGLE WAS CLUCKING, THAT I WAS BEING VETTED FOR THE SUPREME COURT OR QUESTIONED FOR A CRIME.

REALLY? I'M BEING GRILLED THIS HARD? OKAY, I'LL HUMOR YOU THEN. THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

NO, I DON'T THINK THAT I'M TOO GOOD FOR YOUR FOOD! THE FACT IS THAT I CHOSE TO EAT BEFORE I CAME TO AVOID EATING UNHEALTHILY!

NO, I'M NOT STARVING MYSELF, I'M SIMPLY EATING WHEN MY BODY TELLS ME THAT I NEED TO.

NO, I'M NOT ANOREXIC, BULEMIC, OR FASTING. I'M TRYING TO MEET MY PERSONAL GOALS.

THE QUESTION IS, WHY INVITE ME IF I'M GOING TO BE ACCUSED OF BEING RUDE FOR OPTING OUT OF THE PORK RIBS, GUMBO, FRIED FISH, BIRTHDAY CAKE, CUPCAKES, PIES, AND POTATO SALAD? OH, AND JUST LET ME SAY, IT WASN'T COOL HOW YOU PUT THE BANANA PUDDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THAT PARTICULAR CONCOCTION IS MY WEAKNESS.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRR
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG
GGHHHH!!!

I'M TRYING NOT TO BE WORKED UP OVER IT, BUT IT'S TOUGH. FAMILY IS FOREVER, BUT THEN SO IS THIS FAT ON MY THIGHS. I'M JUST SAYING. IS IT ASKING TOO MUCH TO SUPPORT ME IN MY JOURNEY? I GUESS THAT'S WHY I HAVE FRIENDS.

I NEED SOME SERIOUS SPA TIME AFTER THAT. WOOOOOOO-SAAAAAAAAAAH

Thanks SOOOO very much for the words of encouragement. Every now and then I let things get to me, and this just happens to be one of them. I've got to trim the fat from my life... not just my body. But just like losing weight, it's much harder said than done. Again thanks for the boost. I really needed it!!! emoticon

It is normal, people want us to fit with the program. It took years before my wifes family accepted that I just don`t trink much. Family seemed to have not concernes as my 5 ft 8in body snuck up to near 250 pounds but many concerns when it got down to 160.

    Why?

Well because is is what they know. It does not matter if what they know isn`t so.

Over time they have accepted that I eat what I eat, that I drink very little alcohol, that I am likely to take off for a 10km run. They still think it is all very strange but they have given up trying to get me back into the fold, well, they have mostly given up, most of the time.

    Hang in there.

Social functions, especially with family, can make it really hard to stick to your goals. Good for you for standing up for yourself and not letting anyone guilt you into eating what you don't want to. One strategy I use at things like barbecues and potlucks is just to bring something on the lighter side that is amazingly delicious. It's harder for someone to get down on you for trying to eat healthier when they realize how good whole food can be!

It sounds like you are doing all of the right things to eat healthy! I guess misery loves company so it makes them feel better when you participate in their calorie-laden fests.

Keep doing what you are doing!

Just wanted you to know that you have a lot of people supporting your efforts on Sparkpeople. We are proud that you want to be at a healthy weight and eat better. I am maintaining my weight but I don't want to eat a lot of junk anymore. I still want to eat mostly healthy foods and exercise.

What you must understand is other s at the party want to do the same thing you are doing. They want to be able to say no to all the extra treats, they want the knowledge of bringing your own snacks or even chicken breast to throw on the grill because they are trying to reach a goal. Some wanted to applaud you and probably will. But what you worry about is them. Like you stated that your life is at stake and if you want to get healthyyou can with out apologizing to any one. Because just like they question why you are trying to get healthy is the same way they will question you if you decided to eat every thing in site with out a care in the world. You will never satisfy everyone. Thats why you have to work on satisfying yourself.

Hi friend, families can really put a chink in your armor at times. I have three sisters that pull the same malarky - I stopped seeing them as often and choose to associate more with health concious people. I still love them - I just won't condone their un-supportive nature. God bless your efforts, Earl
