How often should I eat?

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Hey Guys emoticon
I have noticed, by reading your posts and blogs, that each surgeon gives different instructions after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
I have alluded to this before, but let me lay it out.............
I self paid for my surgery, had to borrow the money, had a little trouble getting it and when I did couldnt get the full amount.
Sooooo, instead of paying $24k for a surgeon/team who gave ongoing support for 2years post op, nutritionist, psychologist and support group INCLUSIVE in that price- I paid $17k for a surgeon who did the surgery. I had to pay extra to see the psychologist and extra each time i saw the surgeon at 6weeks, and then every 3 months after that.
Basically I had the surgery, got given a handbook and laters gators! lol
Let me just pop in a wee disclaimer at this point - I am VERY grateful I had this surgery and the surgeon did a good job with the surgery.
I do feel very frustrated with the lack of support from the medical team.
Thats where you lovely people come in! No pressure or anything but you guys are taking the place of Surgeon, nurse, psyhcologist, nutritionist AND support group!
So my question is this - if you were told to only eat three times a day, what reasons were you given and hows it working for you? For those who were told to eat 5-6 small meals a day, same question. I was given the 3x a day, no more, no less instructions but I am tempted to give the 5x a day thing a go.
Your thoughts please!
Thankyou
Rach

HI there, if you google Cornell University and gastric sleeve diet, your result will include a PDF file from Cornell with dietary guidelines for gastric sleeve patients.

I am pending surgery on Monday, November 5th at 9:30 am but have been reading a lot about this surgery and found this info. I hope it helps you.

    :)

I had RNY and not sleeve, and am at 6 months out. I was told - approx. 300 for each of my 3 meals and no more than 100 per snack - no more than one in the am and one in the pm, but snacks should be an exception and not a rule. I eat around a cup of food at a meal (depending on what the food it - density wise)

    Hi Rach!

I was given the "three meals" instructions. I was told that post surgery, I should only eat 3 Tbls. (45ml) per meal. At three months out, I should be eating 1/3 cup (80 ml) in a sitting, protein first and then carbs (if there's room). My intake would go up to about 1/2 cup volume per meal (120 ml) at 6 months out and up to 1 cup (240 ml) at one year out, and should stay at that volume for the rest of my life.

However, being that I feel hungry and shaky if I don't eat every 4-5 hours, I have altered it so I'm eating less at meals but making up for it by eating "snacks". I'll eat a slice of deli turkey or a small slice of cheese just to hold me over until the next "meal" which will be a boiled egg or a slice of ham. So I'm not eating a lot, but I am eating often.

If I think of anything else, I'll repost. Blessings!
