Enjoying the Power Surge
Thursday, June 13, 2013
Sometimes when you are training it seems as though you go forever without progress. Then in the space of a couple of weeks you make a HUGE jump in fitness/weight loss/whatever your goal is?
I call this a power surge.
I am delighting in one right now. While in the middle of marathon training for a fall marathon, I'm doing minimal speedwork. But my base has given me power to draw on when I want it.
I have PR'd an 8K and a 5K this spring
I took 2:45 minutes off my 3.5 mile time from last year (and I think PR'd the 5K again during this race, but it doesn't count)
Ran my first sub-9:00 mile in a race.
I've run an "easy 10-miler" and felt strong and invigorated.
I freaked out the guys at work by moving up and running with them on Mondays (it's like racing a 5K for me, and an easy day for them, but still! You should have seen the look on their faces when I caught up with them and stayed for over 2 miles.)
This week, after 8-9 weeks of bouncing around the same 3 pounds up and down, I moved down and can see the 130's on the scale for the first time since 2008!!! (I had to go back through my workout logs - I didn't realize it had been that long!)
I know this is really the result of the months and months of consistent base building, and careful increase in miles and vegetables. But it feels as though it all happened in the last couple of weeks.
I'm exhilarated, and practically jumping out of my skin with energy. Going to enjoy this while it lasts - a lot of long runs are a still ahead.
