Saw my Dr yesterday and WOW some new news.

Thursday, August 01, 2013

I was going to add good/bad news in the title of this but I thought NOPE it is all just news.

I saw my new MD yesterday and he had been very attentive in reading my medical files, so he was armed with some good suggestions and some great answers to what is going on with my diabetes.

First of all he said he considers this my #1 problem followed by my depression. My high blood pressure was great, medicine working for that and he will not know about my cholesterol or triglycerides until my lab work comes back. I went in this morning for fasting blood work.

I have been really GREAT at keeping a record of my blood sugar readings since my hospital stay in May. So I was armed with those records and also my food intake.

He took those and studied them and asked lots of questions. Then he told me that he personally does not think that any of my diabetic medicine is working. I am on metformin and glyburide which is an oral medication and I am on Levimer & Humalog which are injected insulin's.

By the way I have been diabetic Type 2 for 22 yrs. I went on insulin 14 yrs ago.

The first thing my Dr did was take me off the Glyburide & Metforman. He said if they are not working why take them. He left me on my insulin and told me to make sure I keep a good record like I have been. He wants to see me in two weeks for these results.

He also said he does not know everything there is to know about diabetes. But he has worked with an Endocrinologist before and he wants me to make sure to keep the appt I have on 9/10. NO WAY would I miss that appt.
He also made an appt for me with a Pharmacologist, this is a Dr who works with medicine and how it affects you or if it is not working right or if there are more medicines mixed together than your body knows what to do with. So I will be seeing this Dr on 9/4.

Blood sugar problem solvers:
1. Go off non-working medicines.
2. See my MD in two weeks.
3. Keep good records of my blood sugars and track every BLT(bite, lick and taste).
4. See new pharmacologist on 9/4.
5. See new endocrinologist on 9/10.
6. Make notes to take to my MD about everything that could help with this problem ie. new medications I have heard about, vitamins suggested to me or I have read about, just gather all the info I can that might help the Dr.
7. Make a new DIET plan for this problem ie: Low Glycemic Load, Dr Fuhman, Adkins or Mayo Clinic, or one from the ADA or NIDDK.
8. Cut out the thinking that I know what is best for me when it comes to eat......because apparently I DO NOT. I need to follow the eating habits of a diabetic because that is WHAT I AM.
9. Eliminate more and more *stressors* out of my daily life.
10. Go at this with an I CAN DO IT attitude.

So there you have it ladies of assured that the next update will be much better than this one was.

(and thank you to all those who commented on my last blog **TCoHP team Assignment A Stage 5. My Bad Habit's Revisited** with such wonderful advise for me. I so love and appreciate ALL of you.

Sounds like you got someone really listening and reading and willing to work with you to get things right again. I love the news about a Dr. to check on all the meds. That is so important because your new Dr. is right, there may be things not working or your body doesn't know what to do with or even one of them making your depression worse.
Sounds like pretty good news to me.

Nimsy, I'm so glad to see such an overall positive blog from you. It's great that your doc is admitting he doesn't know everything and has some others for you to see. I've felt for years that an endocrinologist would be a big help for you.

No one knows EVERYTHING and the fact that he is willing to admit this; makes him AOK in my book. Many docs want us to think they DO. And Nims, YOU are your best advocate so keep on doing what you're doing girl! LYG
