Thank God for Chopsticks.....

Monday, February 24, 2014

Here was my lunch menu for today:

Smoked Salmon Salad
Chili Bean Sauce Stir Fry Eel
Korean Grilled Beef
Stone Pot Rice
Bean Past Stew, Doenjang Stew
Lotus Leaf Tea

This is a typical Korean lunch...and there were hundreds of little dishes I couldn't identify, Kimchi among them.

So, in an attempt to be polite, and not to pass out in the afternoon, I tried most everything. Thank god I'm no pro with chopsticks because it means the amount of food that actually makes it from the plate into my mouth is minimal, so if I'm going to gag, no one really notices. But Asian hosts always watch what's on your plate so there is a need to be polite in tasting everything.

Korea is tough for me, food wise, but the good news is there are few carbs in most traditional meals. I stuck with a healthy amount of grilled beef (no oil), mushrooms, unidentifiable green veggies and lots and lots of Corn Tea (you heard that right, Korean teas are grain based rather than bloom based) . The pot rice is actually a gooey, sticky wonderful rice, but it comes at the end of the meal and I found myself full enough that I didn't actually do more than take a mouthful to taste.

In the past, I would have just asked for the rice and filled up with the carbs. But, I did ok today sticking to my plan (though I can't really log my food properly!).

Thanks for listening! Have a great Monday!

Look at you- that's great! Glad you're enjoying the food and using those chop sticks!!! I used to be wimpy about trying different foods and then my friend took me to an Indian place - made me try a bit of everything - and it was amazing!!! Now I wish I could go back, but there were a lot of yummy bread dishes that you dipped in mysterious stuff & I can't do the bread any more!

Keep up the good work - and enjoy this time away. I hope you get some cool pics that you'll post for us once you're back!
