Why I need to stretch!

I have always struggled with stretching it just seemed like a boring way to end a workout, over the winter I discovered what the price for not stretching is. I have always had minor aches and pains in my lower back and legs caused, I thought, simply by my bodies aging process (I'm 52). In September I had a knee injury that caused me to limp and after several sessions of physical therapy the pain was manageable. During that time I developed lower back spasms that radiated down my other leg, as long as I kept moving I was fine but after 4 hours of inactivity very painful intense spasms, which equals no sleep I was taking heavy doses of drugs to combat the pain and let me sleep while my doctor and I tried to get to the root of the problem. I found some yoga poses on Spark people and You Tube that helped a lot but if I missed a single day I would have the spasms.
I work with a personal trainer and she suggested that I have a massage therapist work on my hamstrings because the flexibly in my legs was decreasing likely due to the slight limp caused by the knee injury. The massage therapist said no issues with the hamstrings and moved on to the iliotibial band. OMG! that was so painful she worked on that and instructed me on the use of a foam roller to loosen the IT band I have not had a back spasm since and I also lost some more of the knee pain because that lovely, long neglected IT band causes both back and knee pain when it tightens up.
In spite of all the pain, followed by enlightenment I still struggle with stretching. Why is my default setting one that causes me pain?
So my lovely Sparkling friends I have set myself a challenge, that is part of my BLC goals 10 weeks of consistent stretching and rolling, because amazing things can happen in ten weeks!

    I usually find in my clients the IT band need the most work out of the entire leg! And when it's fatigued, it hurts to get worked on!! Sounds like you have a great massage therapist! It's common that when a muscles is pulled or injured, it's because it's taking the brunt of another muscle not working properly.

    so sorry for all your back pain.... as we seem to live in parallel universes.... I too have been dealing with back and knee pain. I have never heard of the IT band and will have to do some research on that. I am LEARNING everyday so thanks for sharing your story with me !! Hope you feel better soon..... I started workouts YEARS and years ago with Denise austin and I learned to stretch with her and LOVED it ! So I do like stretching !

    The IT Band can affect hip and knee so I discovered years ago but learned about the foam roller only after a serious thigh problem. And I stubbornly still have not bought one for home use. Our gym has many but your post has been a timely reminder.
