Wedding Plans

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

So this post is quite a bit overdue. :-)

Wedding plans are coming along better than I was expecting. Because we are looking to hire local companies for the items and services we need, we've been fortunate that some of the merchants have been giving us a good price. For example:

Photographer usually costs $1000-1200, he's charging $500
Reception hall are usually in the $300-500 range, we got ours for $50 for the weekend. We plan on getting a gift card at a hardware store, since the building is being renovated this summer, just as a note of appreciation.
DJ services cost about $800-1000, through My Gal's contacts we're getting it for $200, and that includes the SOCAN fee (fee that goes to the recording artists set up in Canada)
The banquet room at the hotel will not cost us anything, since we're guaranteeing at least 20 people having supper with us, and booking at least 5 rooms for our party has brought the price of the rooms down too.
If we decide to hire a cab driver for the night, we plan to give him/her $150, about $50 more than if they worked the Saturday night at the bars.
My Gal's son's girlfriend volunteered to bake the wedding cake and the slabs to serve our guests. Although we'll have to buy all the ingredients and pans/utensils needed, it won't cost us more than $150 for the top layer (for us to consume at our first anniversary), bottom layer (served to wedding guests) and slabs (reception guests).
A local merchant in the same building where I work offered a metal archway for the decor, and before I had a chance to say thanks, he then told me he would not charge me for the rental, and that we could borrow it as our wedding gift.

About the biggest headache we've run into is finding the leather vests that fit us. It's not like we're size Harley Davidson Medium, and the local tack shops don't seem to have anything in black in any size. That said, we've found 3 shops in/near my hometown, and later this week, we plan to make a day trip and check out those merchants. We showed up on a Sunday, and I forgot that most local merchants are closed on Sundays.

This past weekend, we went shopping for swimsuits and summerwear at Penningtons ("big chick" store chain in Canada), since there was a 50% off sale. Over $350 later, we left. Mind you, that's for 2 people and it was half price. And I swear that we bought one of each item in the swimwear collection! What didn't look good on me fit her like a glove, and vice versa. Even the full bathing suit, with a very basic design, only looked good on me.

Six weeks from today, we'll be on a plane heading for our honeymoon in Mexico.

Everything seems to be lining up. The only 2 things we really need to get are the marriage license, and the rings paid off. Anything beyond that is fluff, a bonus.

It's great that things are falling into place so well for you.

About the vests. If you haven't found some, do you have a store that sells leather in your area? They could have a line on someone who could make them for you. A local shoe maker/repairer might also be able to help with leads.

Good luck with all your plans, I am sure everything will fall into place.
