Devotional taken from The Upper Room, written by Holly R. Mickler (Florida)
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! -- I John 3:1
As I sat in a prison visitation room beside my husband, a state inmate, I began to notice the people around us. For the first time, I saw these people as brothers, sons, husbands, fathers, and ultimately, children of a forgiving and loving God. they were also men whose identity in society's eyes was a number and a criminal record. Yet aside from the armed guards watching from the corner and the bare, concrete walls surrounding us, the setting could have been any restaurant or family event we might go to. That moment, for me, was the truest picture of how God in rich mercy and grace looks at us.
We may commit vile crimes against God and God's people. And while we must face the legal consequences of such actions, God still sees us through forgiving eyes, with tenderness and love. We are no longer thieves or murderers or liars; we are God's sons and daughters. Very simply, we belong to God; and God never gives up on us.
Prayer: Dear Father, we praise you that we are called your children, and we thank you for saving us and for looking at us through the lens of Christ's righteousness instead of through our sin. Amen.
P.S. I love the fact that Jesus, has an overflow of mercy that never runs dry, and he looks beyond the sin to save anyone who comes to him.
Let's be a conduit of blessing wherever we go and whoever He sends us to! Praise the Lord.
