I have an obstacle course in my house. Before I explain what I mean by having an obstacle course in my house, let me begin at the beginning of my first encounters with physical obstacles.
My first memory of a physical obstacle was in the Park playground. Trying desperately to get the sea-saw off the ground all by myself. Then an older bigger kid coming along jumping on and purposely keeping me awkwardly in the air much to my pleas of "Let me down." Then there was the merry-go-round where I saw big kids jumping on and off. If I got on, they trapped me in a merciless dizzying push around until I screamed to let me off. Big kids tended to take over the playground. Easy for them to jump up and grab on to the over-head bars and walk across easily with their hands. I wanted to do this too, so I would climb the ladder and reach awkwardly for the bar. The first time I was able to reach and hang from that bar and make it across, I didn't care how much my hands hurt, I just was proud that I had made it through my first obstacle.
My first time as an adult, trying to do a physical Obstacle course was when my (husband to be) boyfriend's parents took me with them to see my Boyfriend in Fort Dix, where Allan was doing his basic training. Allan and I took a little walk together and he was showing me the Obstacle Course, so I got it into my head that I was going to do the jump. So, I, in my little red skirt and jacket and heels, made the jump and ended up falling into the mud. I was so embarrassed, but he said, "That was the cutest thing I ever saw!" so I laughed it off with him.
Next time was when my children were little and I took them to the Park and I tried the Monkey Bars again. Easier to reach than I remembered, but still a challenge.
When my grandchildren were little, my daughter and I took them to the Park and we tried our hand at the monkey bars, while the girls laughed at our silliness, but encouraged us to join in with them.
Now my kids are grown and my granddaughters are 12 and 15, so no more Obstacles in sight. I could go to the same Park that I used to go with my own children, it is still down the street. It's great for a walk, great scenery but I would feel silly trying the monkey bars now at my age. Maybe if the kids would do it, I might try. but it is an end of an era for me and the image of me on the Monkey bars.
So, on Saturday, I was watching this show called American Grit. A Physical Endurance Show, and I see them performing against an Obstacle Course and it's truly inspiring.
Then it came to me. I have an Obstacle Course in my House! I have two flights of stairs that I climb everyday down to put the laundry on. Trudge back up and then down to where I carry the basket back up to the main floor. Fill a basket with clothes to bring to the upstairs bedrooms and it's too heavy to carry then I push it on the carpet to the stairs where I lift the heavy load up stair by stair to the rooms up stairs. Then I was thinking of all the other Obstacles around the house that are physically challenging, like doing the heavy housework. carrying groceries in from the car. etc. So I'm thinking, how can I make an Obstacle Course in my house? I decide to make a circuit Training Course of two flights of stairs, followed by The Gwee Gym, (pulley system ) followed by My Smart Wonder Core,(sit-up &Push-up assistance device) Then I have my hand held weights ranging from 1 pound to 5 pounds. Then I descend the stairs into the basement where I have my Treadmill and my weight machine. I will do like they do it on AMERICAN GRIT, I will perform until I am burned out. I am combining Cardio and Weights.
I warmed up with Yoga, before I started,
then I went on to challenge myself with the circuit training Obstacle Course in my House. Now I didn't wear myself out, I just did what I could do and it was fun. I didn't end up in a heap on the ground like they do in American Grit, but I put myself through the Challenge to see just how much I could do until I had to stop.
There was no one there but me, no one laughing at me or trying to stop me, just me trying to prove to myself that I could do it!
So I would tell you, if you want to have an Obstacle Course in your House, you can do it too!
