Shopping My Pantry

Sunday, June 05, 2016

I am becoming determined to shop my pantry. My motivation is both financial and driven by limited storage space. My goal is to buy things to go with what I have on hand, which should mostly involve fresh fruits and vegetables!
An inventory of what I have on hand:
Proteins: 2 types of lentils, chic pea powder (suitable for making pancakes, gravy or to thicken soup), a variety of nuts/seeds (almonds, cashews, pecans, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, etc.), 1/4# peanut butter, a bag of split peas for soup, and 1 can of hummus. I also have some cheese sauce powder and canned fish for the flexitarian in me.
Starches: a few types of rice, several types of pasta, quinoa, instant mashed potatoes, a few types of flour, 1/4c oats, some wheat germ, a small loaf of German bread and a small bag of roasted barley.
I also have a variety of condiments and oils, a few soup mixes and some dried fruit. Fortunately, I no longer have any candy or junk food tucked away. Therefore, I can do this without it conflicting with my greater goal of eating a healthy diet. I know I will have to be creative, but that actually appeals to me.
I am curious how long this stuff will last me, with only the addition of fresh produce. (I will be traveling locally for work from June 27-July 16, so will not be able to make any progress during that time).
I am taking it as a challenge, and will try to keep you posted when I have finished my whole stash!

I think 'shopping my pantry' is probably my everyday reality - and scarcity or limitation certainly does bring forth some wonderful creativity. I'm a bit lost this week as I've run out of onions - and realised how dependent I am on them! I've been sprinkling things with Cajun spice mix to compensate!

Congrats! I realized, as I read, that I need to shop for my pantry. I'm almost completely out of veggies. Oh well, that's my life. I'm glad that you are getting on top of things.

I have been trying to use up what's in my pantry, too. For several months, we've had a problem with India meal moths and I think (cross fingers) they may be at long last gone. I had to toss a lot. Anyway, what's left is on my kitchen counter and on the dining room table. When I bought a bag of rice recently, I submerged it in the kitchen sink to make sure there was no hole. What happened was a pinprick in a new bag of rice that was contaminated and that bag sat in the pantry until I used up the old bag and that's how the moths spread. Through a hole so tiny it could barely be seen.

If you have room in your refrigerator or freezer, keep the nuts and seeds there...unless you use them very quickly. They keep fresh longer. Do you roast the nuts before you use them? The flavor is intensified and tastes wonderful. emoticon

It's fun to clear out your pantry in ths way. It's been a while since I did it so I think I will follow your lead.

I recently cleaned out my 'pantry' which right now is boxes or containers in our garage/storage shed (we are living in a motor home currently so not much space for pantry items). I had a few items that had become too old and had to toss but I found things I had 'forgotten' ... unfortunately after we did more shopping. I now have 3 bottles of honey - I'll have to pass 1-2 on to someone else perhaps because it would take me forever to use that much! So I have an abundance of several types of food now ... and curious to see how long it lasts as I only need to add fresh produce from the Farmer's Market and my garden.

As shopping is quite a 'trip' for us ... about 140-150 miles roundtrip ... I decided to make a pantry 'item list' and keep track of food inventory better ... we hope to get to where we only do a shopping trip about once every 3 months.

I cringe whenever I have to toss food out or waste because it got 'too old' ... I'm hoping my inventory list will help me manage that better.

Love this! I often say I need to shop at home...for whatever it is I am looking for. Creative thinking inspires and produces some pretty dang amazing things. You do have some solid stuff to build from, now make that magic happen...my money is on you! What is for dinner?!
