Today I wanted to DO SOMETHING! Summer in Milwaukee is a fabulous time! It makes up for the months of cold crappy weather we have in winter. Today our choices were to go to Greek Fest or watch bike races which is what we decided on.
For 10 days in SE Wisconsin, we host America's Dairyland Bike Races, coined as the largest competitive cycling series in the U.S. Everyday a different city/town/village hosts bike events for the day. Today it was down on the East Side of Milwaukee at the Downer Classic. Races were run all day but we didn't get there until 6 p.m. But this meant we caught the cutest races, the kids. Individual races were run for 3 year olds up to 9 year olds. It was so much fun cheering them on! Then came the beer keg race. Souped up tricycles dragging a beer keg behind. Only in Wisconsin! Finally it was time for the main event, the Pro Mens with racers from across the US plus from other countries including Canada, Columbia and Australia. The mens race was 90 minutes of pure athletic ability. Despite this event happening every year for "I don't know how long", I have never once gone down to view it. What a big mistake! The husband and I had a great time! We also snuck in time for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant right on the race course. Tacos (I had 3... Korean beef, tilapia and shrimp) and cucumber margaritas (sounds gross but so yummy! especially on a hot humid night!).
We decided to park down on the parkway that runs along Lake Michigan and walk up to the events. About a mile and a half each way so at least I got my walk(s) in today! Plus walking with the husband is no easy task, at 6'2" he has long leg strides. Definitely a workout. I was a little worried since today is the start of the 5% Summer Challenge Group I joined. I would've hated to let my team down on the first day! Go Tiger Monarchs!!
Tomorrow calls for another hot humid day... not sure what the plans are. Maybe Greek Fest since we didn't make it today. But I have a feeling my workout will be done at the gym!
