Seven Years at Spark People: Part II

Seven Years. I have learned much. I have succeeded, failed, begun again, and repeated three times. I won't ever stop trying, no matter how many times i might "fail".

I wrote the following:

emoticon *I believe the hardest step is the first one taken. That's the leap of faith -- the walk in the deepest hour of the night when even the stars have stopped twinkling. Each step takes me closer to the light. From here, I can see that first shimmering ray of dawn. The sun is rising and I am so much closer than I was yesterday.*

I still feel that way. Yes, I have fallen many times, but I always come back. I come back because Spark People, it's staff, coaches, and members, have never once let me down or left me feeling alone. It feels like family here.

Be aware that there can be tough moments when you're ready to throw in the towel. Frustrating times when you may want to quit. When it gets rough or you hit a roadblock, you must forge ahead and keep going. Despite blood, sweat, and tears, do not give up on yourself. You are worth the fight for a brighter future!"

There are so many lessons that I have learned and so many left to be discovered. Every day at SP is an adventure... a quest... a mystery to be unraveled!

Lesson #1: Never eat anything bigger than your own head. (Don't laugh. It CAN be done.)

Lesson #2: SHARE. Tell your family and friends that you're making changes and explain to them that they are NOT to tempt you or derail your plans. (Be firm. Be steadfast. NO EXCEPTIONS.)

Lesson #3: Follow the "one bite rule": Take one bite of something healthy, a vegetable, a fruit, a smoothie, etc. If you don't like it, at least you tried. If you DO like it, it's another weapon in your arsenal of healthy foods.

Lesson #4: Ask your server at restaurants that your food be served on a child's plate with a child's serving size. Use toddler-sized utensils. You'll take smaller bites, it will take longer to eat, and you will fill up faster.

Lesson #5: Buy a set of Blue dishes. Blue plates tend to discourage over-eating. Don't eat the blue food.

Lesson #6: Don't eat the same thing everyday and don't eat the same amount of calories every day. Mix it up -- eat more one day and a bit less the next. It keeps your body guessing. Muscle and every other body system has memory. Once it gets used to something, it doesn't have to work as hard. Make it work! Keep it jumping! Tease it a bit... trust me, your body will like that.

Lesson #7: MEASURE EVERYTHING -- DON'T GUESS! A weight loss program needs tools:
1. Kitchen Scale
2. Measuring spoons and cups
3. Zippered baggies (for dividing & saving portions)
4. Bathroom Scale (to keep us honest)

Lesson #8: Mix your salads in large ziploc baggies -- add just one serving (2 tablespoons) of dressing. Shake the bag thoroughly and it will evenly distribute the dressing.

emoticon How to eat Pizza:

1. Eat an apple about 15 minutes before you go out for pizza. It'll fill you with fiber and you won't be so hungry.

2. Get two slices of pizza on your plate. Cut each piece length-wise to make 4 smaller slices. Make a salad to go along (easy on the croutons, cheese, and dressing! No bacon bits!). For each bite of Pizza, take TWO bites of salad!

3. Use a couple of napkins to dab away excess oil on the pizza. It won't change the taste, but it will make for less calories and fat! (You can remove almost 75 calories by doing this).

4. Don't eat the pizza bones! Skip the doughy crust on the outside of the pizza and save a few dozen calories.

5. Eat slowly. Revel in the feel of the food in your mouth. Savour each and every bite.
