"No, Thank you" shouldn't be an issue

Friday, May 11, 2018

I've received a letter. What started out as a friendly 'thank you for the visit' turned into 'we heard you didn't eat, I have food at my house, you don't need to starve yourself'.. Kind of perturbed at this..firstly, I wasn't hungry but out of politeness I did try a meatball. Ack, cough, gawwwwd, if I had a napkin I'd spit this out. Geeeez, it was disgusting. Not sure what went wrong in the making of these meatballs, there were some 'faces' made of the people choosing to eat them. Unsurprisingly, there were plenty of leftover meatballs. My only other options were spaghetti, I have a wheat allergy, so that's out...then the whole "No, thank you, I'm not hungry" thing. If you're not hungry, you're not hungry.. I'm kind of at a loss here. I feel I need to confront the woman that told a number of other people that I'm starving myself and ask her not to do that again. Since when did "No, thank you" turn into such a controversy? Why do people feel obligated to shove food at you?

Ugh, I am so sorry you have to deal with this. It's no fun! I have family and friends who believe that food = love. So turning it down means I am saying no to them. I don't give in and eat the things I don't want to eat, but I would totally confront the person saying things about you to others. That part isn't ok at all.

What I’ve noticed is that many people are overly sensitive so when you turn down their food, they become insulted because they think you don’t like it, and take it personally. In the future, I would claim a food allergy. That seems to work for me.

Have a sit down to discuss it calmly. Family wants to support and mean well but need a little convincing to understand your desire to be healthy. We are here to support you.... emoticon emoticon emoticon

(no need to mention that bad tasting food is one of your dietary limitations ;)

It's hard. Culturally it's very common for politeness and food to be linked. I would say, oh I'm so sorry if my eating habits made you feel concerned. I have a lot of dietary limitations, but I'm doing fine even if I can't eat some foods.

I hate this. When I say no thank you to food people like to get insulted. No I’m just trying to be healthy!!

I agree you may need to address the situation, but cool down first LOL I have a very "pushy" family when it comes to food.. But no thank you sometimes means no thank you!
