Salmagundi (This and that)

Sunday, August 05, 2018

Here we are in August and somehow July got by without my making a single blog entry. [sigh]

I'm fairly given to introspection and self-reflection. I have been posting in team message boards and I find that they rather take the place of blogging. In other words, after I've shared my thoughts, feelings, and experiences there, it seems silly to do so again in the blog. I've even thought of cutting and pasting, but it seems so impersonal. Though I have I wonder "personal for whom?"

Summer class is one class away from being done. It's been a mixed success. Those who attended regularly seemed to get something out of it. This was the second time I've delivered this class and it was certainly an improvement over the first time. "Shows improvement" is a valid comment.

Weight is coming along as a very VERY slow pace. But the key is that it is NOT getting worse; it is not going backwards (gaining). Again, that's a reasonably good evaluation.

Fall classes are just around the corner and I feel that the tight schedule and high structure of the fall semester will make it easier for me to adhere to good eating. The opportunities for making bad choices on campus are minimal for me, so it's pretty easy to pack a healthy lunch and stick to just that.

We're hoping to increase walking now that the heat is letting up a little bit.

I always love to hear from you as I always take away something I can use! I hope you always blog for us as I am a better person because of your "thoughts". Never stop!

    Thank You for sharing!

To be able to note improvement is a good thing. It's movement in the right direction. Good for you not gaining. That's definitely one area I need to see improvement. lol...Sounds like fall will be easier for you to stay on track. emoticon emoticon

Much like weight loss: if you continue regularly, you will lose.
And I agree with you: "shows improvement" is a great comment. I wish I could use it more often with my students...

Shows improvement is great for both ways you are seeing it.

    What are you teaching?

I'm hoping it will cool off soon and my hubby can clear my walking path. Too much work piling up outside here. Fall will be busy.

I don't try to look for something different to tell each one of my groups. My life is simple and not that that exciting so I am repetitive.

To me teachers are like books. Some of them are extremely interesting and you can gain a lot by reading them but you won't learn anything if you don't open the book.

I hope you have a great month, Alex. I feel the same way that you do about blogging, but I know that I have some Spark friends that I'm not connected with through any other channel except for status updates and blog posts (I rarely do the Community Feed) will check in with me, especially when they know something is going on the part of the country where I live (it seems like there's almost always SOMETHING going on). I try to make my posts motivational in some way, although how good that works out, I'm not so sure.

Congratulations on showing some improvement with your summer class! Great job, my friend. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

I think the key there is "those who attended regularly", and I absolutely agree that "shows improvement" is a valid comment. That's what life is all about - showing improvement. Doing a little better each day, improving each task each time it's completed, and as a teacher that's all we can really look for. I get more excited to have my "D" student move up to a "C" than I do when my straight A student maintains his/her A. The structure and time constraints of the school year definitely have benefits.

I do best with routine/structure as well. Good luck!
