Technology's Double Edge

Monday, July 27, 2020

So by now a LOT of Sparkly People know about the Ransomware attack suffered by Garmin. Four days and counting without being able to sync my Vivosmart to their server and hence into Spark. I've been adding my steps in manually, but I can't access my active minutes. I'M BUMMED. So imagine my surprise when I tried after work today and was able to finally sync my data!! Hallelujah!! Then when I went to check on my Spark page, I see that the data is still unable to cross. My attempt to reauthorize isn't able to access the server yet. I have to remember they have untold numbers of users in this same predicament and I need to have patience. At least there are hopeful signs of life.

Since the outbreak of this Covid-19 Pandemic my employer has instituted a pre-work screen app to be filled out every day before reporting for duty. It works via my cell phone and texting answers to a few important questions. Security needs to see my ID badge as well as the "CLEARED" message on the phone. It has worked swimmingly every day until today. I ran through the questions OK and when the app said message sent it never arrived. It was then that I realized that my phone said "No network connected". Whadda mean? No network connected???? No changes to settings or anything have been made since it worked fine yesterday. Since I needed to leave the house right then for the 40 minute drive, I figured I could work this out once at the screening station. So, I ran into a colleague in the parking garage and asked her to tell the Supervisor why I was running late. She took a few minutes to show me the way to the screening site via the internet. Success in getting a clearance, but what's up with the phone? That will have to wait til later. Another conversation with another friend led to powering the phone off at coffee time. At lunch I powered it back up and viola connection completed! Simple if you know what you're doing. Ain't technology fun?!?

I hope your Monday went smoother than mine did.

I used to understand and know how computers worked, that was before the phone became a mini computer. I have not been able to keep up with all the newer things. I congratulate you on being able to manage all that with the help of friends. Have a great weekend.

It is a good thing to power down your phone daily, helps to keep things running well, just like a computer, start up cleans up any loose bits.
