Living Smaller

Saturday, May 01, 2021

While it is true, that I am smaller than I was 8 years ago that isn't what I mean! We have been in Florida since mid December and loving every minute. One of the things that we love is living in a smaller space. This house is about half the size of our home in NY and it is just so livable!

When I cook everything is within an arm's reach and putting things away from the dishwasher is a breeze! All of our books and magazines are in the LR within easy reach unlike in NY where they are in several rooms on three floors. And the fact that this house is on one floor is divine! My knees thank the lack of stairs every day!

With Covid our life shrank too. When we got to FL things were still pretty closed up even here. Masks were required, indoor dining wasn't recommended, and movies were either not open or we wouldn't have gone in any event. The days just flow and for the most part we pretty much stay local....walk Fletcher in the morning, walk to the fitness center to work out or take a long walk. Lunch at home, read out back or at the pool.....shop for dinner, take a leisurely walk after dinner & enjoy Netflix. My family is here so we get to see them and finally with everyone vaccinated we can get together inside.

So where does this leave me? On Thursday we head back to NY and I know we will immediately bond with our house once we get there. Things are better there and I suspect our days will look very much like they do here. Relaxed.

What a year and what changes it has brought. How are you all adapting now that things are looking brighter?

We sold our house 5 years ago. We are currently in a small rental. Once we retire next year, we will set up a permanent house. I have gotten rid of a lot of STUFF. I don't miss it at all. I love my smaller rental. Less to heat, less to clean. I think living with less is a lesson I have learned with age.

Glad you had a good time in FL. I didn't miss going down there this year and I don't plan on going next year either. I must have turned into a homebody! At the end of this month I will fly out to Montana to be with my baby sister for two months. Looking forward to the mountains again. (((HUGS)))

I love Florida also. I can walk everyday, the weather is always nice and when we come home in the early spring well it's ok too. If we had thought about it and had known how nice it would be to live in Florida we may have thought about selling our house here and buying something there. Too late now and just too old now. We still trek to Fl at the end of Jan and stay a couple of months to get out of the winter and will probably do so until we get too decrepit to drive. emoticon

Take care as you travel and when you get to "home". I am thankful for my move to a small space but I still continue to "weed out " stuff and honestly believe that if I was younger would pursue a personally designed tiny home. It helps to live where the climate allows year round living, not having to escape either hot or cold extremes. emoticon

It's wonderful that you have enjoyed your place in Florida so much -- and you will be happy to be back in New York too, I'm sure. Our house here in PEI is about half the size of our former house in Ontario -- but this is the only house we have!!

So you are a "snowbird?" The best of both worlds. Both sound lovely.

Adapting? Us? We have a small house in town which belonged to my parents. We kept it after they died thinking that people do not live at the lake forever. At some point if the 100 steps from our house down to our dock becomes difficult, we probably should not live 25 miles from town.

Last summer we lived in the town house so the kids families could enjoy the lake without endangering us old folks. When they returned to school and work, we moved back to the lake house and we've been hermits here ever since.

Soon our totally vaccinated family will be able to join us. Our granddaughter has a summer job at a Marina like she did last year. So she will be with us full time after finals in 2 weeks.
Her Mom, a teacher will stay here too. Many others will be coming on weekends. Looking forward to that.

Glad you are loving your place in Florida. Lots of walking and having family close is a plus. Hope you enjoy going back to NY too.
Things are just now opening up here, seems so different. Will take us a while to get back out there, think we will still stay close to home.

I only have the one house (1700sqft) and fortunately a good size so we weren’t on top of each other all day when weather outside was nasty.

Grateful to be vaccinated and able to see people socially again.
