Mulling about Self Care

Friday, May 07, 2021

Watermellen writes wonderful blogs. She recently (April 23, 25, 26) wrote about taking care of ourselves. She even asked people to list some small things -- her example was stretching for a minute when she felt like she needed to -- do to take care of themselves.

Here's the April 23rd blog. It already has a popular blog award, but if you missed it, check out all three of these gems! www.sparkpeople.c

That "taking care of ourselves" idea has been mulling around in my brain for the last 11 days. I am thinking that I can change the emphasis of my efforts if I really focus on taking care of myself. Oh, I'm not giving up all the vanity motivators, but as I age what really is more important is doing the things -- little and big -- to take care of myself. I'll feel better. May be able to do more things. Live independently longer. Just live longer maybe. Worth it!!

So I am planning to do a series, not necessarily every day, and they may be interspersed, but I am hoping to change my mindset by shifting this focus to self-care through blogging about self-care efforts.

The first thing I'm thinking is that recently I've been so focused on trying to lose weight and maintain successfully that I have once again excused my Splenda and Stevia overuse. My focus is on caring for me, and the result is not being thin, but being healthy. So I'll think about that as I am choosing my drinks today. And if I can do better today, I just may be able to do better and better. This one isn't a simple one for me, but it is an important one. I'm not going to yell at myself when I slip, but I'm really going to think about what my body needs and how my efforts can support my body.

Marsha, I'm so very very happy to hear about your new focus on self-care.

You do so much to take care of others -- especially in this last year, it seems to me.

Really looking forward to hearing what you do for you. Tender trusting self care (and NO yelling at you, ever . . . can you imagine how all of us Sparkies would rise up to do battle if anyone ever yelled at YOU??????)

Now as for the vanity . . .nothing wrong with liking the way you look, right? Such a pretty pretty face!!

Looking forward to your shared experience. emoticon

I'm sharing this link here both because you've mentioned stevia and so has 4A-HEALTHY-BMI.

All stevia is not the same. If one is using stevia, do you know which form you're using?

WatermEllen sure does make one think ... doesn't she. But then my circle of Sparkers all mean a great deal to me include YOU.

As I dust off the non-stop caregiving of my beloved Hubby and the grief of losing my dear sweet BFF of 35 years ... I also plan a journey of self-care ... so I look forward to your blogs.

I successfully lost 100 pounds only to find most of them ... and focusing ONLY on losing weight and exercising is NOT working for me.

I'm taking the next couple of days to "think" through my plan ... not a plan of attack ... but a kinder, gentler plan. Sunday will be my "start" date ... a Mother's Day gift to ... MYSELF.

Great thoughts Marsha! There is so much more to self care than just food. I find that when all of my other needs are being met, the eating and exercise kind of falls into place. It’s a total package. emoticon

Agree! I think those thoughts about emphasizing self care have been swirling around in my mind too. (I think that might be why they feature so prominently in the challenge-thingy I just set up)

It just seems like such a healthier mindset.

I find it interesting you mention the stevia. My body responds to it in a similar way to other non-nutritive sweeteners - cravings later. Bad news, at least for me. Despite all the marketing about it being “natural.” I kind of thought maybe I was the only one!

Eventually it comes back to self-care for all of us, doesn't it? We want to be healthy, we want to live feeling good, we want to be able to function, be active... I think it only becomes more and more important as we get old-er, too.

I love the thinking blogs that WATERMELLEN puts out there, too. emoticon emoticon

emoticon Watermellen gets everyone thinking to be sure!
Glad she is getting some recognition for them too.
Ironically you mention stevia. When I saw some herb boxes on offer, I thought how nice it would be to naturally flavor my smoothies and veggies. I have never been into sweeteners of any kind, wasn't born with a sweet tooth I guess. One of the boxes features some stevia and I researched it and having fresh stevia imparts a different flavor then the dried stuff. For some of the tart tasting smoothies I make it would be nice to have them a little sweeter.
You can do what ever you set your mind to and I am sure you will take self care and run with it! Becoming more relaxed with the weight loss angst will only help your cause to be healthy!

Thought provoking blogs from WATERMELLEN. AND you are spot on. With a focus on health, things happen. I found that really helped me in maintenance.
