Thursday morning we walked Fletcher and it was already in the high 80's. Stored the outdoor furniture in the garage and packed up the car and headed north. Fletcher was in his crate having taken his anti-anxiety medications and I sat next to him in the back. We had a cooler and another small bag with snacks just in case.
Sad leaving Florida; we had a magical five months and got lots of walking, sun and fun. Started working with a trainer who really helped with mobility and I will get back to doing those exercises. He encouraged us to stretch every time we got out of the car and what a difference that made.
first night we got to a hotel outside Savannah and already cooler. Lucked out with a great Mexican restaurant right next to the hotel. Too pooped to go into town and headed out the next morning. The breakfast buffet was not only good for breakfast but I packed up things for lunch which did come in handy.
We stopped in North Carolina at a fantastic rest area and had a picnic then took Fletcher for a nice walk around a lake. Already could see the changing landscape with more deciduous trees and no more palm trees. Also cooler.
Got to Richmond the second night and temps were dropping and we had MORE rain! (drove through a severe t'storm the first day). Great hotel near the park so a good walk with Fletcher and then dinner in the lobby where he could join us. Have to admit that my food choices weren't always the healthiest and that's OK once in a while.
Last leg of the journey and the scenery started to look like "home." The horrendous traffic on day 3 certainly let us really take in the scenery so that was the upside. With traffic the trip took an extra 3 1/2 hours. Driving in to our area was just wonderful.
Trees almost all green, flowering trees full of color, flowers starting to bloom. Looks like our daffodils were the best ever. Grass is lush and green. Seems like a new world compared to Florida.
Gradually unpacking and settling in. Took Fletcher for a long walk this morning and he was willing to go back down the hill to the park (something spooked him last fall and he wouldn't go that way). the temp was mid 40's so jacket and gloves! I took another walk and plan to walk around town later to get lunch before an afternoon rain.
Tomorrow we'll get back to our northern routine. I am so impressed with Fletcher who adapted to well to the trip. only one barking incident as we were trapped in traffic getting on to the George Washington Bridge. My partner who is the driver noted "we all feel like barking!" He ran in the house and ran all around exploring his turf. Then headed to the deck and relieved himself. Amazed he remembered.
Things are opening up here and don't see as many masks outdoors. Stores still require them. We are both vaccinated so may go out for dinner tonight and eat indoors. What a change from last year when we were still in lockdown.
Have been sort of casual with my eating the last week or so with eating out a lot. Now will get back to most meals at home and looking forward to that.
Happy to be back!
