DASH for pre-diabetic

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

Hi everyone. Been a long time since I did a blog....the Covid-19 pandemic sure changed things for most of us. So glad it is lightening up some and with the second vaccine I am feeling safer and so are my family and friends. We can HUG again and spend more time together. emoticon

Have used ZOOM for silver sneaker classes for the past year. I have been lucky to have my Recreation center with the same leaders we always had put on the program. Some go into class but most of us do the Zoom from home. So grateful for this. I also need to do exercise all the other days that I do not have the classes. So am using a treadmill at my daughter's that they got due to the pandemic for their home. Great idea. Walking and doing DVD's on my tv or computer is great too with leslie sansone. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I have had some health issues since I fell in the beauty shop, due to the mask blocking my vision when stepping into the chair......Anyway, that will be for another time to talk about.... emoticon ..

Presently I found out I am Pre-diabetic and that is my current situation......So my doctor wants me to try the DASH diet and log all meals as i do anyway but watch the foods I eat and be aware of the ones that trigger weight gain, etc. So I will be working on this. IF anyone has any suggestions for this type of diagnosis, feel free to comment to me......
Meanwhile I have library books I got and also will go to the Dietician in a few weeks to see
what she advises. emoticon

I am grateful for Spark and all the motivation each day for several years now and really appreciate the friendships I have been lucky enough to find. I love the articles and the games and it has inspired me with so many things and all of you wonderful Spark friends. Keep sparking and creating healthier ways to keep us all going . God bless. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Summer will be here soon and I hope all of us get outdoors more and can see more people
and have fun.
I also have joined a F+V challenge....However there seems to be 2 in that group....Is there a way to take me off and keep me in only one for the challenges so I can log into this with many people.....I sent a message also to a friend asking about it.....thanks so much

hugs and blessings to all, emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Also happy that we all get to see our family and get our hugs

You have done well keeping up with exercise during the pandemic. There are always alternatives. We just have to look for them. I hope you have recovered from your fall. I can trip over my own feet, mask or no mask.

Good luck with DASH. I track my nutrition every day.

OH my dear! Sorry to hear that you fell!

As for the pre-diabetes, here is what I did:

I started tracking my meals – every morsel. I checked my blood sugars before and after meals. When things were a little steadier, I checked after each meal, and then just in the morning.

I kept a food log with my food and the blood sugars. That gave me an idea of how the meals I’d were affecting my blood sugar.

GOOD to meet w/a dietitian. That will help you in meal planning.

Are you on any medication? Be sure, if you are, to take it as prescribed.

AND EXERCISE. Even if it’s just 10 minutes. That revs up the metabolism and helps the body metabolize carbs.

I tend to be VERY low on carbs (intentionally), because type 2 diabetes is essentially a carb intolerance.

I weigh and measure my portions, even now. That is another huge key.

I see you’re doing the DASH diet and that’s good.

    Wishing you luck!

Sounds like a workable plan and I know you can do it!! My daughter recently started on the DASH for her blood pressure and it's working well for her. Lots of changes over her normal style but she feels so much better and it has helped her to realize HOW to eat healthy.

PS I'm not sure what F+V is. I hope you found your answer.

You're doing great with your exercise! emoticon
The Dash diet- hope it works out for you. If you lose the weight you'll get out of that Pre-diabetic zone.
So glad you blogged! SP has helped me through a lot and I have learned so much too.
    Keep sparking. emoticon emoticon emoticon

So glad you could do your Silver Sneaker class by Zoom with the same people you're used to! That sounds like something to look forward to, and so convenient!

I'm sorry you were diagnosed as pre-diabetic, but it seems you have it under control and are determined not to let it get in the way of your health. Sometimes, strangely enough, when we encounter a health threat (like my mini-stroke and knee replacement or your pre-diabetes diagnosis and shoulder problems), it motivates us to take better care of ourselves.

I didn't know about the fall in the beauty shop! Oh no! I'm very scared of falling. I hope the resulting issues are soon all resolved. Maybe mask-wearing will soon become completely unnecessary for all. That must have been a frustrating turn of events.

Take care, my friend, and thanks for keeping us updated!

The vaccines have made life more enjoyable that's for sure. It's nice to gather with family and friends again. Looking forward to summer activities.

Good luck with the DASH diet. I've read good things about it; it's supposed to be one of the better ones out there. Many healthy choices. Not really a diet, but a lifestyle change in the way a person eats.

Enjoy the next part of your journey. emoticon

It is nice you can resume a social life and be able to exchange an actual hug---Up close and personal! Hopefully things will keep going in a positive direction and more will get their shots---is so necessary. Hope the new diet works well for you. I was also told last doctor visit---my sugars were a bit "high" so just be aware. So will keep on the straight and narrow on the spark trail. Have a great Tuesday and I enjoyed your blog!
