Hi Everyone! Welcome to the Team.

My name is Isabel (AKA ~ Issy or IS1GAR)

I join SparkPeople in January 2010, not yet mentally ready to start my journey of a healthier life style. I hit (what I call "BOTTOM") in August of 2011, I was denied health insurance due to my weight (213 Lbs), my age (58 at that time), high cholesterol (230) and high blood pressure (131/90). All normal now.
My first reaction it was to be "ANGRY" at the health insurance company, then came the feeling of desperation and realizing I was actually killing myself and later came the action plan to do something about it.
In September 12, 2011 I went back to SP for help, I started logging all my meals....NO it was not easy to get use to do it specially write down at least three meals per day. At the beginning I had many days that I logged breakfast, some other days I logged breakfast, morning snack and lunch and sometimes I thought about logging at the end of the day and by that time all I could remember was what I ate for dinner.
Then I start printing the reports and even with half filled days I was getting terrible numbers, that was my WOW moment and I said to myself this really works and I need to gain control and do it. I started writing down everything (the good, the bad and the ugly) that went in my mouth.
I honestly thought I had a pretty healthy conscious and I was cooking healthy and nutritious but my reports from SP was painting a different picture, my sodium and cholesterol always exceeded the recommended milligrams by a lot.
Ex: Sodium - over 4800 mg (going as high as 5124 mg) vs. recommended max of 2300 mg.
Ex: Cholesterol - over 640 mg (going as high as 792) vs. recommended max 0 - 250 mg
Don't forget at the beginning I was not fully committed to log everything I ate.
But sadly enough those where the numbers in my reports for the last quarter of 2011.
I did not started doing any physical activities until I joined the Jan Jump Start Challenge of 2012, I really couldn't move very much, my legs were always hurting, actually from my waist down every inch of my body was in pain at all times. I was not able to do more than 2 or 3 repetition of the videos but I dusted off the treadmill I had also bought in Jan 2010 (not being used either) and started walking, at first I didn't had enough balance to walk faster than 2 or 2.5 which translate to 30 or 24 paces, but I kept adding minutes to my slow walk, then I started adding the pre programed exercises....I had to hold on for dear life or I would had been flipped like the people on the Biggest Looser, but since I don't have a personal trainer nor a doctor in the house I did it one step at the time.
I kept listening (more than doing) to Coach Nicole's videos, I heard her loud and clear what she was saying and I also follow her advise to do as much as I was able to do and then when the good old body say is OK to add a minute or a repetition then I added more.
Now one year and almost 9 month later I can do any incline, walk up to speed 4 which is 15 paces, I jog up to 5 minutes and then walk 5 minutes, repeating up to 3 times, my minimum walks now are 2.5 miles daily and I walk 4 miles on Saturday morning with two other Spark Friends at the trail, I also bike and do some strength training.....(got to get better at this).
I have lost 40 Lbs. I have another 38 Lbs to get to my goal weight but after I loose another 28 I want to do maintenance for a while before I go all the way down to 135.

In my personal side I have been married for 42 years to a wonderful husband and we have two daughters and 4 grand children the oldest being the only boy of the family.

I moved from Union City, NJ to South Florida (Palm Beach County) since April 1973 to August 2004 when I moved to North Florida (Clay County) and have lived in Middleburg south of Jacksonville since then.
I have been managing our family business since I moved to the Jacksonville area.
In part building the business was the mayor part of my sedentary life I used to have...kept using the excuse "I don't have time". Now I say I can't not afford to be tire, so I plug myself to the treadmill for energy. emoticon

I also participate in several teams of SparkPeople and I am the Team Leader for the Jacksonville Team. I have become one of the No.1 fan of the Spark Solution book and team.
I will be happy to assist you in any way I can to help you succeed with your team.

I think the more active you stay within the web site the more positive results you will have in return and I welcome you to be a great team leader.

Best wishes to all!

Issy

Hi there--I'm Sylvia--known as enuff81020 in other circles. emoticon

I just celebrated my fourth Sparkversary on May 14. It is hard to believe all that has happened for me in this four short/long years. I came in with having lost about 30 pounds and to date, I have lost a total of 173 pounds. I have been a yo-yo dieter since I hit junior high years--and since I am now 57, that's a lot of yo-yoing around. I have lost over 100 pounds about 6 other times, but this is the longest that I have kept it off. I believe that SP is the reason for that because I can access what I need whenever I need it--unlike other groups where you have to have a meeting or an appointment for support and that rarely comes when you need it most. Also, I seem to do best when I am helping others because I won't suggest something to you that I don't do and try myself.

I have 8 children, ages 15 to 31. I have a wonderful husband who has spent the biggest part of the past 15 years dealing with me and a ton of orthopedic issues. I have severe arthritis and fibromyalgia, with the arthritis being an inherited condition from my father. However, having over 150 pounds of extra weight on my bones and joints has not helped me at all. I have had over 40 surgeries in this time frame that includes 4 joint replacement surgeries and a fusion of my lumbar spine and another of my cervical spine. I am having an important surgery to remove scar tissue and skin on June 10th that should relieve some of the pain and stress on my back and I am having a(nother) rotator cuff repair on July 12th to handle some rather unpleasant shoulder pain.

I am a teacher--a reading specialist to be exact. I am a National Board Certified Teacher and a trained Reading Recovery Teacher. I love teaching and caring for kids. I am a 40 plus year member of the Church of Peace, United Church of Christ in Rock Island, IL. I am born and bred here in the IL Quad Cities which is an area of about 250,000 people that lies on the IL/IA border where the Mississippi River flows from east to west. I am now a swimmer and aquatic exerciser. I go to the pool daily, rarely missing a day to walk, exercise, swim, and stretch in the water. I have learned that this is easy on my skeletal system and that it is both fun and good for me. I really have learned to love exercise and I can promise you that I never thought that combination of words would ever come out of my mouth.

I am a member of several Spark Teams and love to help others out. If you need anything, please feel free to contact me and let me know. I will help you out the best that I can--and if I don't know the answer, I will find someone who does.

Congratulations on taking this important step in your life.
Best wishes as you set your goals and get going here at SP!
Sylvia

Hi there,

SparkPeople is a site dedicated to helping people to shift their lives into a healthy lifestyle that will lengthen their lives, allow them to enjoy themselves, and to be happier than ever. It often starts with a quest to lose weight, but as a person drops a few pounds and then a few more, they learn that they like feeling better and those changes become part of who they really are.

SparkPeople has helped many people to become happier than they ever imagined. It has helped people to reach goals and do things that they never even considered. SparkPeople is a wonderful gift to each of us who comes to learn something, track their food and activity, earn some spark goodie points, and/or visit with their friends.

Congratulations on finding SparkPeople! We know for some of you it might not be the first time or the second time, but hopefully this time, you are ready to make the shift into living the life you were meant to live. We want to welcome you and wish you all of the success that you deserve and that you are capable of having!!

Best wishes,
