Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to say hello and say what a GREAT inspiration you all have been! I'm on W1D2 as of tomorrow and I'm excited! I always wanted to be a runner but NEVER thought I could do it at my current weight. I was outside for W1D1 yesterday and got some wicked shin splints but I think that's from a combo of not stretching and being outside. I'm going to try the treadmill tomorrow and be sure to stretch and see if that helps. I'm also going to get some of those sport gel insoles for my shoes. Keep up the good work to everyone and remember WE CAN DO IT! You guys kick butt!

Last night I jogged for 40 minutes straight! WOW! First ever!!!!! I went almost 3 miles too! I used the route mapper here on spark. I went 2.77 miles. Slowly but surely, eh?! I have to ride my bike over and do a weigh in because I may have passed from obese to over weight now.I started this jogging mission obese and I am happy about that- see we can do it!!!!

PTL!

God bless-

I just wanted to say that I think everyone is doing so great! Congratulations on taking those first steps and believing in yourself. That is the empowerment that prevents us from failing in other parts of our lives, IMO. Keep up the great work and I will run with you as soon as I can breathe normally. Yay, team!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to check in here, and see if anyone can relate to my issues (I'm sure someone can!) I tried the c25k program before, and followed it very closely. I got a podcast and did the weeks as written. I ended up having issues with my knees and shins/calves and had to stop. I got the clearance from Doc, and started again. I am on "week 4", however this is my 8th week running. I have been doing each week twice. It has helped my knees and I have gotten past the shin/calf thing too. I weigh close to 200 pounds, and in watching the biggest loser, I thought "if those fat people can run, this fat person can run". It's true! I'm loving it, and the fresh air is wonderful. My only drawback in all of this is that I have only lost 4 pounds in 8 weeks. It's discouraging. I'm keeping my eyes on a 5k in the spring, and not much worrying about the weight, but would like it to start coming off sometime soon. I am going to have a breast reduction in the beginning of the new year and will have to take 2-3 weeks off. Any suggestions for alternate activities (I will be allowed to walk). Thanks, and happy running! You can do it!

I'm new to the group and have my target start date for the C25K as Monday Nov. 2nd. I'm excited, but worried. I've never been a runner and I'm 60 lbs overweight! I can walk for several miles and have been doing aerobics videos for the past couple of months...and doing fine on those....This is something I've always wanted to do! You guys are all so inspiring! I've really comitted to this, have been planning it for the past 3 months, using DVD's to get active, bought good running shoes and a heart rate monitor. Trying to find a couple fo newbies/C25Kers in my area too....I'm GOING TO DO THIS!!! :)

Just wanted to share with you guys. Today was the day I ran 3.1 miles or 5K! I totally believe the new shoes gave me the advantage and allowed me to push through. It was on the treadmill and I did it in 40:30; the next step is to be able to pull off the same thing while running outside!

Thanks to you all for giving me so much support and encouragement!

Shannon I actually started outside and then when it started getting cold I came in to use a treadmill. It was a lot easier on my knees. I know the transition back out will be hard but I am hoping by the time the weather warms up I will be a lot stronger and it won't be as bad as I imagine.

Jenni you know 'I got your back'. I believe in you just as much as I believe in myself. And a snails pace is a great pace. Any forward movement is progress. before you know it you will be doing the 2miles plus more and we will all party for you! Just keep it up. You are so strong and it's time you start believing that more and more. I was afraid in the beginning too, but this team helped me believe in myself, and now look at my growth. You Are Next!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! Glad to see so many taking the plunge! Just go slow and don't get discouraged as the hardest part is starting. You may have to repeat weeks, and that's OK!

SHANNON: I made the transition from indoor to outdoor and it is A LOT harder. You just have to go easy on yourself and be patient. I can run 2.5 miles on the treadmill, but even running a mile outside is a struggle. I guess the thing is to try it (I love it!) but don't be upset if you are not running at W5D1 times yet.

It's been a tough running week for me because of my ankle. I'm getting those new shoes this weekend no doubt about it! I think the ankle is finally healed up, but I want to wait til the weekend to get running again. Been getting in some great walks though!

I made it though W5D1 last night. It really wasn't that bad. I felt like I could do more but I didn't want to push it. I have been running on the treadmill and I need to start running outside. I know that I won't run as fast or as far. Has anyone else made the transition from indoor running to outdoor running?

Your encouragement means so much. I know what you mean about overdoing it... It's actually hard sometimes not to do too much just because you want to continue losing and getting in better shape and so on. I am about half way towards week 3. I can run/walk about 2 min at a time. I feel like I am crawling in my progress sometimes, but I am really proud of myself over all. I figure it will come all in good time. You should really be proud that you are running over 2 miles! I can't wait to get to that point!

Jenni don't even let it worry you. It happens to the best of us. Just continue on plan like it never happened and things will level out for you.

I am still really tired today and have this crazy pain around my collar bone on my left side. I don't know what it can be. The only thing I can think of is tweeking it while doing side planks. I really hope it goes away soon.

Tonight is a run night. The last 2 have not been stellar performances, so wish me luck. I think I pushed too much too fast going from 2miles to 3miles. I am going to just work on 2.5miles for a little while and then move up. Per to training program I should be at 2.75miles easy. So I guess I will sit in week 8 for a while until I can do that distance easily.

Try and Try Again....

*sigh* Haven't run since Saturday. It's been a bit of a week, but I really just slacked yesterday. I have no excuse. Alas. I'll be doing a session tomorrow then.

Jae, my time challenges are my way of moving between weeks. If I have trouble moving up, then I just keep adding on a minute or two until I can do the total time running during a workout, then I put them into the required blocks and move ahead. It's worked pretty well so far. I'm not sure if it's actually a physical thing or just some weird sort of mental block, but I'm using it anyway. =)

If not now, when?

Hi! I start the C25K a few weeks ago. I'm just did finished W4D3 last night. I never thought I would like running...I'm kind of addicted now. I love the intervals, it seems to make the time go by so quickly. Last night I ran/walked 3.16 miles in 43 minutes. I thought that was pretty good!

I just wanted to introduce myself. I recently found c25k and started Week 1 Day 1 on Monday. Today is day 2 for me! I have never been a runner, in fact, I've always hated doing it, but secretly wanted to like it, if that even makes sense?! I have been in and out of SP for a couple years now and I've never been motivated enough to get fit! Well, I had a baby in Dec 31 2008 and he is what I live for now! I want to get fit for him! So here I am, ready to do this!

My Motto is... "Don't sweat the small stuff, Everything happens for a reason, It will all work out in the End, So turn that frown upside down and live, love, and laugh like there is no tomorrow"

I have taken about two weeks off due to a big exam I have on Friday. I just wanted to check in (at the advice of my Spark Lifestyle checkup this a.m.). I am so proud and inspired by everyone on here. I have a virtual personal trainer who knows what it is like to train / run while being big. Her biggest advice was to go slow so that you can last the entire time. Don't worry about breaking any speed records. Watch your HR and last the entire time that you intend to walk / run. I will be back as soon as that exam is over. I may walk / run the night before just to relieve some anxiety. Let's do it!

Welcome back AllForMe. I hope everyone is better. Just take your time and work you way back in.

I agree too, it doesn't matter which program you choose. You can always work at your own pace.

Blue you are doing so good with the time challenges. I need to work on my time but I am not that brave yet. Hoping it will come automatically.

Sorry to hear about the ankle Karvy. I hope you are up and out in no time. I thought about trying Zumba, but haven't found a place near me offering the class.

Tonight is a run night and I am looking forward to it. My last run was 3miles but it was REALLY hard. Mentally and my body was not feeling it either. I hope tonight is alot better.

Try and Try Again....

Hi I'm new to this C25K team and have been running for the past month or so. I'm moving on to W3D1 my next session, and although I had to repeat the first couple of weeks, I'm feeling much stronger now and hope to pick up the pace a bit. Thought I'd join the team to get some support, I really want to stick with this and learn to run and make it look effortless (ok maybe just close to effortless).

Hi guys!

Welcome back ALLFORME... and BLUE_BLAZES sounds like you are doing just fine!

I also agree with IHRIWUEN that either plan is fine, and don't forget that you're not locked into 9 or 12 weeks! I'm in my fourth month of C25K!

Saturday marked a milestone as I ran 2.5 miles for the first time! It was a slow 2.5, but it was 2.5! It is gratifying to know that I only have 0.6 miles to go until it is a true 5K. I've registered for a Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving, and it is my goal to complete that 5K running the whole way through.

However, I got dealt a setback on Sunday when I Zumba'd myself to an ankle sprain. It's not too bad, and I'm hoping I'm back to running by the end of the week, but still... it's 60 degrees here and I want to run! We might not get weather like that until spring!

Wishing you all happy runs this week!

Whichever version you pick, be sure to be flexible with yourself and the transition from week to week. If you move up to the next level, and it feels impossible, there's no reason to Not go back to the previous week for another few runs and then try again.

I did my almost-W4D1 again on Saturday, and bettered my time by two more minutes! =) And I finished three of the 4 intervals, too, so I did 3-5-3-1-1. I was pushing those last 2 out one at a time because I was determined to improve my time. Trying again tonight or tomorrow. Maybe I'll actually finish it this time. =D (or at least push out 5 little one minute bursts so that I do the full time) =)

Jae, I'm definitely not doing the full distance yet. On a good day, I was close to doing 2 miles back when I was starting W5 right before I fell off the wagon. Granted, I haven't actually tried to do the full 3.1 miles yet. I'm sort of waiting until I finish the program and see how close I am. At my rate, it'll be a 9 month program instead of 9 weeks, but at least I will have finished it. =)

If not now, when?

No, unfortunately when I went to Best Buy 2 years ago, the sales person I talked to said the MP3's were much more user friendly and not to go with IPOD. Now, I'm being told differently. I have a Sandisk Sansa Viewer, which I like because I can figure it out...just not the Podcasts. The company support should be open now so I can call to ask questions. Thanks for your input.

Do you happen to have an iPod touch? Because you can always get the C25k app. It's awesome! You can listen to ur own music and have the app tell u when to walk or run.

I was going to start the C25K a few weeks ago, but didn't work out to do so. I now have re thought my goals to get myself back on track with this and another challenge I am doing. I am starting tomorrow, but wasn't sure if I was going to start the 9 week program or just start trying. Then I realized I can start the program but doesn't necessarily mean I have to do each week in a row. If I need to stay at week 1 for two weeks, that is better than nothing. For now I need to start out on my Tread Climber hich may be a little awkward, but at least I can keep the tracks level rather than having them go up and down. I can't seem to get the Podcasts transferred to mmy MP3 player, so need to contact the company. But by using the Tread Climber I don't have to feel paranoid about people seeing me and hopefully it will get me back to using it. I got out of the habit of walking on it so now I can also use it when it gets to cold. Hopefully I can get outside this week since the weather is so nice. I'm looking forward to getting started now. I am planning the first 5K in spring. I hope to do the March for babies since it is so near and dear to me and I won't need to raise a bunch of money like I do for the Breast Cancer walks that I try to do. Here is to the first day!

Hi Everyone! It has been a couple of days since I have posted and I can't tell you how much better I do knowing that you guys are around to encourage me. I have been doing really great for about 3 months. But..I have had those old feelings and bad habits trying to work their way in these last 2 weeks. I don't know why! So far I have not given in to temptation and gone over the edge. Does anyone have any thoughts and help for this.. I thank you all!

Teena, I don't have any experience with the bags, so I don't have an opinion. But I feel the same way as you. I don't know if I would like to be weighted down. I did buy an arm strap for my ipod and to hold my keys, but I have not used it yet. It's been really cold so I have been running inside. I wish I had your weather problem. =)

Thanks Karvy and Blue.

Blue I run waaayy slower than you, so I am not close to 3miles yet, but I am getting there. Wow, I can't wait to get my speed into the 4's.

Today is W8D1 and I am just going to focus on the distance (3miles) and ignore the scheduled run time (28mins) even if it take 45-50mins. Once I am achieving that consistently then I will work on the speed. I am hoping the speed will come easily as I run more and more.

I want to stop and thank everyone who has participated in this thread. It has been so supportive and encouraging. I don't know if I would be at this point if I had not found you all. Thank you. And I hope that I can help encourage someone else along the way. I laugh now when I think back to when I was posting about being scared to run the 5min and 8min sets. I have come a long way in self confidence that I can complete this.

Stay focused and run strong!

Hey all wow this thread is awesome! I been reading bits and pieces of everything everyone has been writing. I "was" and off again on again C25k...but no longer! I'm on W2D3 :) My only problem with running outside is I get so thirsty (obviously this comes with living in FL) but I just hate hate hate to have anything in my hands when I run errr. Does anyone use those belts...and if so how do you feel about them? Some lady was telling me about it during my last 10k I did and I'm not too sure how I feel about it emoticon

Jae, I agree. Run with what you're comfortable with. I've already "completed" C25K in that I can run for 35-40 minutes, but I'm still not up to the whole 5K, so getting to that point is key for me.

Blue_Blazes, run whatever feels comfortable. Keep trying and don't give up!

Thanks for the encouragement, Nancie and Karvy! =) I attempted W4D1, but didn't quite push it all out. Instead of the 3-5-3-5 running intervals, it turned out 3-4-2-2, which is still a couple minutes better than Week 3! I'm trying for W4D1 again tonight.

Jae, obviously I am so not where you are right now but I would think since you're already running the time now would be a great opportunity to start working on your speed. That's what I plan to do when I finally get up there. =)

On a similar note, I'm finally able to run most of my intervals at a consistent 4.4 or 4.6 mph instead of 4.2, tops. Yay! Speed really does come with time! =D

If not now, when?

Hey Guys...
So I need your opinion...
It's time for me to move on to week 8, but I am currently jogging longer than the sessions in wk8 and wk9. Do you think I should still kinda stay with the program, or should I just consider myself done since I can jog the 30mins? I am not up to 3miles yet, but that is going to take some time to build up my speed.
The last few runs I just got on, listened to the ipod app ques and kept going.

Besides that everything is going really good. Previously my goal was to make sure I made it to 2miles before I stop running, but yesterday I was trying to push myself up a 1/4 mile and did 1/2. So the entire run (including warm-up/cool down) was 55mins, totaling 2.75miles. And boy-oh-boy I could feel that after getting off, but I am proud of myself for doing the extra time. I am thinking I will focus on stamina and then work on the speed.

WOW...I sure am chatty this afternoon.

Try and Try Again....

Thanks Karvy. I think I am going to do it. It is a charity 5k with a choice of running or walking. I guess I was just freaking out a little bit.

Hey Susan... I ran in a 5K last month and I was only running two miles at a time. I ran the first two miles, walked a 1/2 mile, and ran the last half mile. It worked out fine for me! Don't push yourself if you're not ready, but know that it is fine to walk a bit if you want to run the 5K! Also, if it's a 5K for charity, know that there are going to be plenty of slower folks and walkers, so you won't feel left out!

I am about to sign up for a 5k at the end of October...and I'm terrified but I feel like I have to try it. I got to about week 5 of the c25k and then just started running consistently. Im up to 2 miles but havent gone any further. Any tips, hints, or anything? I'm really nervous about doing it.

Good morning, runners!

Glad you're feeling better, Blue_Blazes. Definitely take it easy when you first go out, and take care of yourself. Mischief, even if you're tenuously following C25K you have a great thing going in building up your time and endurance!

As for insoles, that's a great idea to see if it works for you. I'm going to the running store after work to get the gait analysis done. Apparently they will take a video of my feet as I run! Funny stuff! I've been meaning to do this for months, so I'm happy to be finally doing this. Hopefully I can find a pair of running shoes that I am happy with as I've been running in cross-trainers since I started in June.

Another random note, I took the SP trivia today only to get a question that said "TRUE OR FALSE: YOU CAN SAFELY WEAR WRIST AND ANKLE WEIGHTS TO INCREASE RESISTANCE WHILE RUNNING OR WALKING," and the answer was FALSE. That greatly surprised me given the amount of ankle/wrist weights I see in stores! Apparently it increases your risk for injury with very little additional benefit. Just thought I would share with you!

Have a happy hump day!!!

Blue/Liz- keep at it, you will get there eventually. Better to make sure you can do it, and not be injured.

As for me, I kind of stopped after week 7. I am running 30 min each run, and will do that for two weeks. Finally managed to hit 2 miles this morning, in the rain and 45 degrees out. I am slow, but I am doing it. If I can keep up with the 2 miles in 30 min, then after 2 weeks(which would put me at finishing the 9th week) I will just keep running to see hope long it will take to do 3 miles.

My very first mile I ever ran took me 27 min, so I see progress in my speed. I was still smoking 9 months ago, after 30 years of smoking, so being able to run 30 min is a big accomplishment for me.

Nancie

*deep breath* Okay, here goes. I've been running Week 3 sessions for the past few weeks. Those nasty colds screwed up my consistency, so I couldn't push my training up as quick as I wanted. but I think I've done that enough now, and tonight I'm going to try for Week 4 (again).

I'll try to come back in here later tonight and let y'all know how it went. I want to start making real progress again, darn it! o.o

If not now, when?

Jae: I think I am gonna give those insoles a try. Thanks for the input.
I am working on getting up to week 3. I can run about 2 min. at the beginning but by the end I am only going about 1 minute again... just gotta keep going.

WTG Nora! Isn't it a great feeling to know that you can do it! Keep it up.

Jenn, I got gel shoe pads at walmart and they have helped TREMENDOUSLY! Before using them I use to get cramps in my calfs. I just bought the ones labeled as "sport". I say give them a try, it can't hurt.

Well I am on W7D2 tonight. I can't believe I am almost done. It's a exciting to know that I have completed so much and such a short time. I can't believe it's been 7 weeks.

It's really busy around my office, so my posting may slow down a little for a while, but I am still here and still cheering all of you on. Be sure to stop by my page and say hi.

Unfortunately, it actually happens with about 80 percent of the shoes that I buy. I just forgot, because I don't get shoes often, and... I never try to run in them :)

It'll be ok, but it may mean I need an extra day of downtime between runs until they're broken in. Just annoying... I'm all excited to GO!

I did W3D2!!!!! The first time wasn't a fluke. I really can jog three minutes without stopping and more importantly without dying!

Ithriwen, my heels used to get rubbed raw by my running shoes too. I thought it was the first set of shoes I bought but when I bought a second pair - the exact same thing happened. Last time, I bought cross training shoes and now it never happens. I think running shoes don't fit my feet properly. Just something to think about. emoticon

Ihriwen: That sounds really painful! I say listen to your body. If you need rest than you should take it.
Bett: I had to laugh at your post about you "sore butt" I get that all the time ... I figure it's my butt's way of saying 'I'm not leaving without a fight!"
Does anyone have any thoughts on Gel inserts for your running shoes? I am getting cramps in the calves of my legs and I was wondering if using inserts would be helpful?

I did W1D2 yesterday, and managed to push a little harder, which was nice. The rush was a little less than after the first time, but I think some of that was because getting through it was less of a surprise. : )

I'm thinking of putting off D3 until Monday, to give myself an extra day. My new shoes wore the skin off on the back of my left heel on Wednesday, and I've been trying to break in the shoe carefully since, but the heel is Really painful, to the point where it's affecting how I'm walking and making that whole leg sore because I'm walking funny.

Once I get into the stride of a workout, I'm ok for that workout, but I'm wondering if an extra day would help me heal the heel and be safer.

Any thoughts?

Congrats everyone on awesome runs!

Welcome back to C25K Alpha. You're going to be a runner, I just know it!

Everyone have a wonderful weekend. Supposed to be a good one for outdoor runs at least in the Northeast. Might as well get them in while we have the chance!
