It is harder for me not to snack when I am working on something at home. One of my "helps" for this is a little whiteboard. I don't ever record what I eat anywhere but if I know I am going to have to mark the time I ate something it can help me remember not to eat when I don't need to.

Loren,

I'm like you with more meals, I do eat more than the 3 recommended by the good doc. I'm hungry, true, serious hunger, frequently. How could you not be when you are eating 90% veggie and fruit? :)

I'm basically 3 meals with snacks as needed. I follow the 6 week challenge plan most days, if that makes a difference.

Thanks. It's a mini-trampoline, I turn on some rockin' music and get some great exercise on it.

I work from home. Sometimes I take a break and walk around the block, or jump on my trampoline for 10 minutes. If I do eat on my break I'll grab a handful of grapes or baby carrots.

In the same vein, can anyone offer advice for not snacking? I know I can be full and fine on 3 meals a day; when I'm out of the house I only eat that much and love it. But I work from home during the week and take frequent breaks. I'm an emotional eater/grazer, and often find my break to be food-focused! Sometimes when I'm stressed or bored, especially, I find myself 'hungry' and eat more. Any advice? Getting out of the house isn't an option; I have deadlines to meet!

I would have never thought eating three times a day would keep me happy, but I actually feel a freedom from the food. I would say give it a try, keeping in mind that you need to eat enough at meal times to hold you over. Between breakfast and lunch I always feel hungry at about 11 am (2 hours before lunch)...but I drink water and that feeling goes away. If you give the three meals per day thing a try and it just doesn't jive with your body, then don't continue...but you might find out that it's a better way to live for you. That was my case.

I eat peanut butter and jam on half a bagel (carbs and protein) and half a cup of coffee (caffeine) before I go on my morning run/walk (6k) and then breakfast - a protein and fruit smoothie and then lunch and dinner. Four meals. I never eat after 6:00 p.m.

I agree that you should do whatever you do that keeps you eating ETL, but Dr.F talks about the number of meals a couple of times. He's quite adamant that, overall, more than 3 meals a day is bad. He says that the period after digestion ends is when the liver detoxes, and that this period is often uncomfortable, especially in the beginning of eating this way. He goes on about it not really being hunger, etc. So you might want to try more bulk and filling beans and such like Court said. That being said, he says you need to eat more if you exercise alot, too. I'd check his website's FAQ.
I don't mean to sound like a know it all, but I've read his book seven times in eight weeks, and I have to beat this into my own head for it to work for me! I'm still having problems eating enough food, and then if I go too long, I'll also be tempted to eat the wrong stuff! It's really hard for me to find a balance :(

I don't adhere to the 3 meals a day rule. Getting hungry is a real danger zone for me. Getting REAL hungry is a diet buster! I don' t eat much and I eat ETL, a handful of grapes or baby carrots. But if I find myself hungry and it's not mealtime, I eat a little something.

I stay on my road and I don't change lanes.

I eat only three times per day, and I love it! My meals are fairly large in size...which was needed to start out. Now I'm working on cutting back how much I eat at each meal, especially dinner time. I eat 7am, 1pm, 7pm.

I would not cut back on the number of meals at first because I think this might throw you into cravings that would be hard. I think you will find that if you are eating a lot (think bulk) of fresh vegetables and fruits that your stomach will be full. However do remember to eat your beans and good fat (as in flax) which will help to keep you feeling full. Listen to your body.

I personally eat about four/five times a day, but not all are large. At least one of those is a small snack (like celery & hummus or a small apple) and my breakfast can be small (like 4 strawberries & 1/4 cup blueberries).

So in ETL book the Dr's meal plans list three meals a day. Do most of you eat three times a day? I usually eat a lot more than that:
Breakfast : ~445am
Postworkout :~7am
Lunch: ~ between 11 and 1230
Sometimes second lunch:230
Dinner: ~530
sleep about 830.
I am actively hungry for each of these times (if I'm not hungry for second lunch, then I don't have it). If I have a hard workout I actually end up eating lunch around 10 and then everything but dinner gets moved forward.

So, should I just try to eat three big meals, or as long as I am eating good healthy food it is okay? I read the Dr F's on snacking posted on to this group and there was concerns about enzymes, but I've never had digestion problems.

So what do you think/do?
