Hi everyone! LadyDi, that breakfast with raw oats, raisins, bananas, and almond milk sounds so good! I will totally try that sometime. TeacherWanda, it's nice to hear your excitement for the school year. And as always, it's great to hear from everyone checking in!

As for me, I'm back from the wilderness. I managed to do all right, bringing bean soup mix and dried fruit and nuts. It wasn't perfect, supplementing with Cliff bars and having a celebratory beer afterwards, but I managed not to gain any weight. Now it's time to hit the produce section and stock up!

Hello all - I'm back on track, cantaloupe and bananas for breakfast, super veggie salad for lunch and bean soup and salad for dinner. DH is back to work today and I'm installing tile around the bathtub. School starts next week so I will be going in a couple of days this week to set up my classroom. My best to everyone.

Successfully completed ETL week 1....WOOT WOOT. Preparing food to grab on the go has been a great help this week. I measured out salad and beans and grains which makes packing breakfast and lunch so much easier. Looking forward to another successful week ahead.

I actually just eat my oats raw. I put a 1/2 cup of organic rolled oats in a bowl, throw in some organic raisins, 1/2 sliced banana and sprinkle with cinnamon and pour on some almond milk. You can spinkle on some chopped nuts if you like also. I love the oats this way.

Thank you everyone! That helps.. I woke up this morning thinking "its a new day, I will take it one meal at a time.." I am planning a huge salad for lunch and breakfast will be fruit. and maybe oatmeal, but it is already pretty hot out. I have read that you can soak your oats overnight and you don't have to cook them in the morning... has anyone tried it? A cold breakfast sounds more appealing right now than a hot one.. but I definitely need something to fill me up. Thanks!

Don't worry, Kerri! Falling off track happens. As I just wrote earlier in this thread, just eating more veggies and fruits will alone greatly improve your health. And you can eat whatever you want for 10% of your calories and still be on the plan.

I've been doing Eat To Live for about two weeks now and I have not been perfect. But compared to how I WAS eating, I am SOOOOOOOO much healthier! Whatever happens, it's important to forgive yourself and keep trying. Do not give up. Do not dwell on what has already happened. Bad days will not mar your health if most of your days are good days. Don't wait until the next day to "start over;" make your next meal an Eat To Live meal. Thinking this way has helped me get back on track if I am floundering.

And keep posting on SparkPeople! Everyone here has been so supportive and helpful!

Ok, here it is. Consider yourself booted in the behind. I know it is hard especially when there are other people in the house not following the same food plan. Carbs are something I frequently crave, but there are lots of healthy options out there. Have you tried a whole grain pita? What kind of things are giving you problems and maybe we can offer up some healthier choices for you.

It's no fun getting that stuff out of your system and since you are used to it I'm sure you feel like you need it. But you need to be healthy long term more than you need that refined carb fix.

Lisa, the previous posts are right, take things at your own pace, there is no right or wrong way to approach healthy lifestyle and diet changes. I had several health issues and when I got the diagnosis of type II Diabetes I knew I had to make drastic changes and fast. I made up my mind and went Vegan cold turkey (no pun intended, lol). That worked for me and I have been a strict vegan for almost 3 yrs now. All of my health issues have been resolved and no more type II diabetes. If I would have had those health issues I would have approached it differently I'm sure. So just do what works best for you, slow and steady is good. Best wishes on your journey.

Welcome Lisa!

I was moving toward an ETL lifestyle before I knew such a thing existed, so I too came into it gradually. You can make gratifying leaps in health with any positive changes.

Glad you have joined us and thanks for posting on the hello thread!

Welcome, Lisa! Eating more vegetables and fruits will already contribute greatly to your health, even if you aren't losing any weight yet. My advice is to fill up as much as you can on veggies and fruit so you won't have any room for those sweets you're still craving.

Keep in mind that real hunger is satisfied by basically ANY food, while a craving for a specific thing is a sign of an addiction. The more you can just cut out anything you feel addicted to, the better you will beat the addiction once and for all. It is difficult at first, but as Dr. Fuhrman says, those uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms (like cravings, stomach cramps, headaches and things that people mistake for hunger) are really your body healing itself. Once you have been eating healthfully and get past the withdrawal stage, YOU WILL NO LONGER crave those foods you were once addicted to. I would never have believed someone telling me this before; just let yourself get to the place where you can see for yourself.

Do whatever you can to kick the addictions now, and after the withdrawal is over you won't even be tempted to go back. Your relationship with food will be transformed.

Hello to everyone. I'm LisaGRH and am very new to SP. I've read Dr. Fuhrman's book (finished a couple of weeks ago), and while I'm not 100% on the program, I'm moving in that direction. I decided to give up one demon at a time. I'm been mostly off meat for about a year, but things like sodas (esp. Diet Dr. Pepper) and sweets have remained in my diet. And I haven't lost much weight that way. So my first goals to bring me more in line with the 6-week plan are to have at least one salad everyday, and to give up sodas.

Absolutely! I agree. And the wedding I went to this past weekend was fantastic. It had Indian food (vegetarian!) and I brought fruit and broccoli in my purse. But yes, lack of refrigeration and 100-degree heat indices make lugging vegetables around in a backpack for five days much harder to accomplish.

I would think that a one day event (like a wedding) or an away from home but still in the world event (like a conference) would be much less excuse than a several day backpacking event...

Thanks! It's Wednesday through Sunday. I wouldn't mind being kind of off the plan (like beans and rice instead of beans on greens) for that period if I didn't end up having "exceptions" all the time (weddings, conferences, backpacking trips, etc.) I want to teach myself some way of doing it even through these especially tough situations, which always seem to come up!

I've never done it, but have read of people using dehydrated veggies for backpacking trips. Might be something to research. Otherwise, I agree with Anne, take what you can, don't over eat and get back to ETL once you're off the trail. Don't forget plenty of water. Hubby and I take lots of day hikes and we carry plenty of water. We never know how long we're going to be gone! I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it !

Depending on the length of the trip, I would not worry about it too much. Carry what you reasonably can haul and eat, and take a multivitamin.

Just saying hi! I was wondering, too, if anyone happened to know anything about how to Eat To Live while on a backpacking trip in the wilderness? I'm unfortunately not able to identify edible plants in the wild... I plan on bringing dehydrated and canned beans and spices, plus dried fruit, seeds, and nuts (but of course I don't want to over eat on those things). But how on earth can I do green vegetables without them rotting in my bag?

Hi Everybody! *Waves*

I can't say enough good things about ETL. I feel like this plan is actively saving my life. I used to wonder how many years my fat was taking off my life and I don't wonder anymore, the fat is melting off!

I feel so good!
