All the suggestions are great and I have gotten tips from them all. I'll add one. Show your fellow diners that you are committed and allow them to help you to stay conscious about what you are eating. If you talk about eating healthily yet order the fattening stuff then they have no reason to believe that you're serious. However, if you ask them to help you maintain healthy eating, they might just do so. They would recognize that you are serious and might become your best cheerleaders in the program. You don't always have to stick to a plain or drab meal, and as others suggested, you can eat less during the day, immediately split and box half the meal, ignore appetizers and dessert, and enjoy what's on your plate. But do it consciously. I'm learning to do this and I'm still in the toddler stage, but when I fall, I pick myself up and try again the next time.

This insightful and revealing thread reminds me that I have been on one heck of a caloric bender for far, far too long and need to adjust my weight ticker - gulp! - UPWARD. Ugh! But it's a new day, and I plan to give it my all.

I was doing pretty well yesterday until.......My husband and I went out to dinner for our aniv. My dinner choice was crab stuffed talapia with wild rice and creamed spinich. This is completely out of my norm. I discovered I don't like creamed spinich (this was not a choice) the fish was wonderful. The rice a bit dry but tasted good.
And then we split a desert. (we never get desert when we go out) New York Cheesecake with strawberries! So much for a healthy meal. (but ohhh was it good!)

My trainer recommends that I plan on having two "cheat" meals a week, although I've come to learn his definition of "cheat" doesn't necessarily mesh with mine emoticon

(Damn it's amazing how much crap I can stuff down my mouth)

Still, knowing that I have two meals a week where i can just let loose helps me from feeling deprived. And even if I go off the deep end at one of those cheat meals (like i did last night - ugh), the bloated feeling helps me get back on track the next day.

Keep on keeping on!

I've been trying to eat well. I gave in to a second helping of pasta at supper tonight and feel guilty. We went for a long walk after that, though. That helped me feel not so bad.

Best thing to do is skip the appetizer and choose the meal. Keeping in mind that you should use your best judgement on the food you eat. You could also just eat the appetizer with a side salad.

Especially when we go someplace 'nice', my husband and I have a rule. You don't have to clean your plate! Sometimes we leave half an appetizer and a few bites of dessert. Sometimes fine dining is about the pleasure of eating, not the quantity. Of course our other big rule...stop when you are full. If you keep those two in mind, you'll be ok. Otherwise, stick to the baked/grilled instead of the breaded/fried.

Had a day were I really didn't want to eat. Ate the one serving of leftover pizza as an actual meal. I pulled some kohlrabi from the garden and ate one, but a bad day for getting my protein. Maybe I can blame it on being 09/09/09.

LOL Actually he's a she. She's picky about what she eats but always hopeful I may drop or give something good. There are also 8 other dogs here to be in competition with and she's sort of low on the totem pole being the youngest.

For lunch, today, I pulled into Mickey D's and had the chicken nugget meal. Not a good choice AT ALL!!! I do feel a smidgen of guilt but I am ready to get back on my horse and eat healthy tomorrow and the next day and the next day...

Husband I have stopped going out for dinner. I have a terrible time sticking with a healthy choice and keeping to an acceptable portion.

The times we do go out? I plan for it, and even though I may end up going over by a little bit, it's not enough to stress over anymore.

I almost NEVER order an appetiser. Or, if I do, I make it my meal with perhaps a side salad.

You can take appetizers home too, right? Next time I'll try that. These days they are so expensive that I feel guilty leaving any appetizer on the plate... so I should just take it too! :-)

DUH! That was soooo easy! Thanks Everyone!

Borrow Morgan from MorgansMom. He looks like he would be glad to finish off the artichoke dip! Or, perhaps more usefully, get a takeout box. Order only things that reheat well. Two for the price of one!

Eating out is hard to control. The only suggestion I have is to request a take out box when you get your meal and put half of it in the box immediately. That way you are less likely to overdo and you get to look forward to having it again!

Yes, remembering that over-stuffed, bloated feeling DOES help! And planning ahead helps too. Knowing you are going out, give yourself a few extra calories (eat lite the rest of the day). Make as healthy of choices as possible... then ENJOY it! Just try not to make a habit of overeating! (Arrrrr!!! Artichoke Spinach dip should be illegal!!! It's impossible to eat just a dab of that!)

We went to T.G.I. Fridays (not the best choice for being health conscious but my boyfriend wanted to go there.) We ordered Spinach and Artichoke Cheese dip and I ate like 2/3s of it. I regretted it ALL night though! I felt so disgusting and bloated... maybe THAT with help me learn my lesson! emoticon

I'd love to give you some suggestions, but I struggle with the same problem. My husband is retired and there's only the two of us at home. We enjoy eating out, and we find it is just easier. I plan ahead, but my follow through just isn't that great. If I have a drink, it is even worse. I find myself eating whatever I want. Bread and potatoes are the hardest for me to pass up.
I've found that limiting our trips to eat out helps me stick with a healthy eating plan.
I guess it just goes back to learning to be uncomfortable until it becomes a healthy habit, and you start reaping some of the benefits.
I wish you the best, and I'll be watching to see if others have some better ideas.

What if I woke up with only what I thanked God for yesterday?

As of now my BIGGEST temptation is eating out. We went to dinner and I had looked up nutritional information and decided what I was going to get before we went to the restaraunt. Then we got there and we ordered an appetizer. NOT in the plan!

Going out to eat and staying on track is hard! I eat what I know I shouldn't then have eaters remorse.

Any tips on how to still enjoy eating out without totally falling off the wagon? Should I even feel bad about splurging every once in a while?

EVERYTHING that has happened in life thus far, has happened for a reason. It all lead me to where I am now, and there's nowhere else I'd rather be.
