I went to my first meeting this morning. I did buy some literature. I am lucky in that I live in an area where there are meetings every day of the week at different times within a 20 mile radius. There are 3 meetings within 10 minutes of my house during the week. I hope to be able to purchase the workbook at the Saturday a.m. meeting. Trying to hold things together today. Evenings are hard for me snacking wise. I try to adhere to a low glycemic food plan as best I can.

I have decided to get rid of caffeine in my diet. The first thing to go is cola. I have one left and will enjoy every drop tonight for dinner because when thats gone I am not buying anymore. hubby asked which did I want coke or mt dew , I said neither I want to quit drinking coke. Instead I'm going to have hot tea and my coffee , other then that water... Wish me luck. Soda is my down fall. my second baby step, the first was switching to non dairy creamer. sparked by sudden trips to the bathroom, when I used dairy in my morning coffee. lol.

I weigh in because when I first moved to San Diego and I weighed 165 pounds, I never weighed in any more. I had lost a hundred pounds and I felt great. We had thrown out our old rusty scales when we moved and never replaced them. I had become very active when I lived in Los Angeles, by the beach and had walked every day at work during my first and second breaks and at lunch time, followed a healthy diet and had dropped a lot of weight so that I could be active with my young son. In San Diego, we first lived in an unsafe neighborhood to walk in in the evening and we later moved to a home in the hills of East County where it was much more difficult to walk than on the flat strands by the ocean. I moved to
San Diego because I was working for my L.A employer in their new Maquilladora in Mexico and no longer felt safe to walk in the slums during my breaks where the factory was located. There were armed guards at the factory across the street from ours with concertina wire on the walls guarding the parking lot! Over time I gradually gained weight until I weighed 365 pounds, a gain of 200 pounds over several years. I didn't want to know. I only weighed at the doctor's office too. After I had injured my left knee from walking up and down the stairs in our home an elsewhere and I could only walk with a cane, I started to go to the gym and exercise on the rowing machine, the only non-weight bearing aerobic machine that didn't force me to put pressure on my left knee; I would push with my right leg and drag my left one. I found SparkPeople, changed my diet, continued to exercise and when I finally weighed at the gym for the first time, I had lost 15 pounds and weighed 350 pounds. Since then, I have tried many dietary approaches trying to find a lifestyle program that I could maintain and not just a "diet". By weighing, I could see what worked and what didn't. Last year, I had gradually changed my dietary program to one that worked very well for me and I could see the drop of weight on the scales: 40 pound in two months! When it got colder, I went off my program to a certain extent and the feedback from the scales was that I was doing something wrong and after watching the scale creep back up 15 pounds, I decided to go back to what had worked for me so well in the summer and by weighing myself on a daily basis I can get an instant feed back on my weight trends, which is now trending downwards, because of the correction of my course. To me the scale is not master or my enemy, it is my compass and I can tell if I am going too far off course. I once went 200 pounds off course while I was in denial, as I had gone off course many times before that. this large gain will not happen again, because I check my compass, at least weekly, an usually more often, when I am at the gym on their accurate balance beam scales.

Me too, I don't bother with weighing in - except at the doctor's where they insist I do. Instead, I go by the fit of my clothes and how I feel. That's a measurable form of success that works for me. I am so grateful that the OA program has worked to reduce my cravings and has relieved me of obsession enough for me to fit back into my normal jeans (sz 18). I'm hoping that I'll be needing some smaller ones in a month or two...

I have decided that I'm not going to weigh in anymore until the end of the month. I have let the scale dictate too long whether I'm happy or not. I'm going to shoot for good, clean abstinence. I'm focused on moving more and eating more fruits and veggies. I'll blog at the end of the month about my results as compared to the goals I set at the beginning of the month.

Good Work CELIA1975! Eight days is great!I was diverted from my abstinence last night , but I started again this morning and renewed my commitment. My weigh in was very encouraging this morning after an hour of rowing at the gym, so that is reinforcing my determination too.

Hi! Hope everyone is doing good...
It's still working for me, because I'm still working it. I am so grateful! Just over 4 months now and I fit back into my normal (but still fat) jeans.

A note on the steps and workbook...don't have to have the workbook to do the steps, it just is helpful to have it as a guide. Those links don't seem to be from OA, I think they're from OA members tho. I'm sure they would be helpful too, but maybe not as clear as the actual workbook. Check www.oa.org for more info. If you go to a face to face meeting they'll have the books there, and they probably would be willing to let you pay later, when you have the money. I have spent much more money on food I didn't need and have paid an even higher price in health problems and self-image issues than the books could ever cost.

If you go to this link, you will find free downloads to help work the steps. Is this what is in the workbook? I'm new and just exploring because, like many of us, money is really tight for me too.
I hope that this is what you were looking for and it helps you work the steps.

It's true what other OA members say, that it works if you work it. I haven't been working the Steps that's why my eating is out of control. Tomorrow I will try harder and put my trust in God.

for me I think the reason it's working is because I'm doing the steps and I have an abstinent plan I think I can live with forever...

Don't know if that helps :)

I like your signature--All things are possible with God. They are. You can do this. The past 2 days I haven't been abstinent either. I'm not using the OA tools like I should. Maybe we both could benefit from revisiting the tools and what we can do and hourly commit our eating to the Lord. I'm going to give it a try.

I wasn't abstinent today or yesterday. I am really trying to get back to my program. I was abstinent for 11 months and just before my one year abstinence, I fell off the path November 2010 and ever since then I am having a difficult time of it. Sigh. Am I missing something or what?

Hi there

Still doin the deal, but have been sitting on step 3 for too long now. Abstinent for 120 days. Just read about willingness to go to any length in Voices of Recovery, and I have to admit...any lengths is a lot for me to consider right now. I can be thankful that so far my sponsor hasn't asked me to do something I'm not willing to do. If I just stay focused on doing this deal one day at a time I am not likely to feel too overwhelmed with what I have to do...

I did 3 consecutive days of being abstinent between meals and staying within my calorie range. It's all part of my personal February challenge to weigh 230 lbs on February 28. So far so good, I am doing it, I feel lighter and more in control! On with my challenge I go!

new to this team, did OA over 20 years ago. going to try the online meetings as going to a meeting at this time in my life will only add more stress. I need to overcome this illness once and for all as I am at my highest weight ever and I don't like how I feel.

Abstinence is important to my recovery and all of us in OA. I haven't been doing too well in that category. I start out the day putting my trust in God, and find myself eating something that's not on my food plan. Tomorrow I will ask for His help again.

I got my partner a cocker spaniel, but since I'm home more, I'll be the main one taking him for walks and all. So more exercise minutes for me.

great support!
all we have is ODAT, and remember ODAP is constantly trying to get us back inside the refrigerator! We don't have to stuff any more, talk about what's eating us and then we may not have to eat over it!
I try to stick to my food plan, try to make my food plan fit my understanding and it works for me.

we strive for progress and sometimes thatn entails gaining before losing.... stay vigilant!
when I change the way I look at things, the things I look at change!!!!

Great spirit, Celia. You're right, it's not really about the weight. If we continue to follow the program, God's will is the one that will prevail, and God has more in store for us than we could ever hope for. I can't help but think that weight loss will be a part of my healing - I see some of it already happening...my pants are not so tight. Throw away your scale and just keep doing it odat.

Still abstinent. Working on step 3 with my sponsor and attending weekly meetings. Life is good today!

I'm a little down. Despite 4 days of abstinence, I have gained 1.8 pounds this week. I know it's not about the weight loss but I wanted to at least stay the same weight, not gain. I'm not going to let it send me in the wrong direction. I'm going to continue this ODAT!
