I asked where you live because I was curious for an idea of the quality of medical care available and whether you are in a culture that does not condemn different forms of mental health care.

This is the first time I see you mention memory lapses. If the cause of the lapses has never been determined by a doctor, it might be a good idea to see someone about it. I think that in the U.S. the appropriate doctor would be one working in neuro-psychiatry, the field that combines neurology and psychiatry. I'm sure that this specialty is active in your country.

As to your asking if you "should" feel shameful, that is the wrong question to ask. You know that people do not choose their emotions. Our emotions just happen to us, they just fall in our laps. Of course we end up with emotions that are useless or hurtful or counter-productive, etc. In these instances, we would rather have different emotions. With the right work (psychotherapy and other efforts) we often enough have the power to see positive emotions replace the negative ones.

Beside that, memory lapses or other things that just happen to us through no doing of our own are absolutely nothing to feel ashamed of. If we do feel ashamed, it would be smart and healthy to work on changing it, to accepting who we are.

I know that you have considered a number of different careers and looked into schooling for them. It seems to me that, when we want to choose a course of study and a career, it would be ideal to follow a path toward something that excites us, that truly is interesting and seems rewarding to us. Now that you say you are "willing" to learn to cook, I wonder if that is a good enough reason to consider studying to the level that is required for a career. Certainly take a cooking class for your pleasure if you would enjoy that (I remember you saying that you really enjoy baking), but reconsider taking on a major effort. Come to think of it, if you find baking a great pleasure, you might focus on that instead of all types of culinary work.

I'm certainly no expert, but it may be that, even with memory lapses, you'd be okay in certain areas. Even if you can't recall a detail, very often common sense makes up for it.

Another thing I remember is that you worry about almost everything. Most of the time you worry for no reason. For example, chefs have their recipes written down. Another example, people take notes in classes. In some types of classes, the teacher hands out the the information in written form.

I wish you well, dear Sam.

First thing I would suggest is a good check up with your primary care physician to be sure there are no health related causes to the memory issues. Secondly consider investing in a small tape recorder. You can record what the other person is saying, use that as your "notes" and you are working at training your brain to remember the spoken word. Thirdly, what you see as memory loss, may be more related to the way your learn. Once you write your notes, do you have to read them to remember, or do you remember most of what you wrote? It may just indicate that you are not a talented oral learner, but very visual and kinesthetic in your learning styles.

I feel a little bad today because I felt a short term memory loss again. I am having a hard time recalling facts which has been told to me just seconds ago. I'm having a hard time figuring out what to do with my life because i never had a job. I recently discovered that I am willing to learn how to cook. However. how can I be a chef if im having problems like this??? When I encountered that cloudy thinking I got a paper and pen so I could write down what the girl is saying to me. That way I could remember stuff. And it is effective. But not all the time i can write down the things I have to write right?? If ever il become a chef, everything will be oral and I just cant deal with that the easy way. I have to have my pen and paper. Should i feel shameful about it? Or embarassed??

By the way, I gave up nursing because of short term memory loss too. I'm suffering from depression and I am already 28 years old! I wonder what should I do!
