~Yesterday I rode my bike farther than I have all summer and the ride included a killer hill! At the end of the ride I felt like I could have gone further... and I know that there is no way I could have accomplished this a month ago!!! ~ The feeling that I get after a really great workout seems to be motivation enough for me right now.... (that and I am 10lbs lighter than when I started on Aug 3rd!)

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie with the posting but been apart of the group for awhile. I am in desperate need of motivation and help to get this weight off so I can walk without my legs or back hurting me. I keep allowing stressed caused by family to dictate my daily routine and I start out good then I fall off the wagon again.

trailmix,

are you working out before bed ? Because that will just awaken you more and jazz you up with energy.

Try eating a piece of fruit, low cal or a veggie raw with your water. Sometimes this works for me.

Curious--why does swimming in chlorine slow your weight loss down? I only have chlorine pools available to me, with the occasional lake.

COMPUCATHY, I could have written your post, including the part about Disney World. In fact, my entire family -- my mother, my husband, and our two little boys -- are leaving for Disney World on Sunday morning. I can't go. If I did it would be a mess. I'm just too fat. I wouldn't be able to keep up with them.

So, maybe in a few years we'll have the opportunity to do it together. But for now, I'll be missing the magic of my boys' faces while they're there.

I'm gonna start crying again.

I'd better shut up.

I can lose weight. I have to keep telling myself that it's within my power to do that. I just have to.

I enjoyed reading your entry. I started yesterday with SparkPeople and am very excited about the possibilities here. This morning, I weighed and was down 1.5 pounds...to 241.5. I want to get to 120...half my size...so I have a lot to go. I am glad to find a place where others are on the same journey as me. When I see commercials on TV and they are saying...I lost 26 pounds or I lost 50 pounds...I think "big deal"...I have so much more to lose. And when I hear them saying they were so disgusted with themselves at these little overages, it just makes me think "you've got to be kidding." Anyway, just wanted to say hi...I am right where you are and we can get there. I know we can. I am loving the freedom to eat what I want but just stay within my calorie range and lose the weight slowly. I will be down to my goal next September 2011...and I'm okay with that. I'm planning a celebratory trip to Disney World then...and I'll be able to walk around in my thin/fit body and not be dying and in pain from walking. Yay! My best to you! You can do it!

~Cathy~

Hi all. I am so tired today from traveling yesterday, but other wise I feel pretty good. Since I was so tired hubby let me sleep. So we didn't exercise. I am gonna do it here in about 15 min. I am gonna talk to the hotel manager and see if I can use the pool before it opens to the public. I do not have a "public bathing suit body". Hopefully they will agree.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the day. Think happy thoughts when you wake up. emoticon

Hey all, I just joined yesterday. I need to lose a lot of weight. Growing up I was active, played sports, but I was always chubby. about 15-20 lbs over weight. In H.S. I did a jazzercise and a dance class back to back. So even though I was over weight I carried it well. Then I graduated and met the man of my dreams. While dating he would buy me a Peanut buster Parfait and expect me to eat the whole thing or eat half of a pizza and so on. If I didn't his feelings would be hurt. I should mention that he is also heavy. His mom always showed affection through food. Anyway we got married and within three months my clothes no longer fit. Was hubby upset no, ( I was crying) he said Honey it's ok we will just buy you more clothes. So you guessed it, I continued to eat like I did in H.S. but without the exercise. So here I am 2 kids later. I have tried to lose weight for the last 21 years, (that is how long I have been married.) I LOVE sweets, carbs, hate veggies, very picky on the meats. But I have decided that somethings gotta give. I am no longer active so that will be my main goal, I think.
Sorry to ramble on just wanted to give background. Congrats to everyone out there that has lost weight, keep up the good work. emoticon

Welcome Johnjr62 !! I resently joined also and its great. I have a physical therapist that has been helping me gain my lower body strength because I have had several back surgeries. so I started slow and for the first time I reached a full 30 min walk on my gazelle + all his exercises but I did a mile and may not move for awhile but I feel great about it. And you will to baby steps turn in to stides and then runs. Spark has helped me get a new outlook on my life and I am grateful. good luck u can do this.

When your weight stalls a good kick start is to do just lean steak and raw green veggies for three days. Eat all the steak and greens you can handle for those three days and then go back on your regular diet. It's worked for me several times before. I also like to swim at least 30 minutes 3 or more times a week. I've found that swimming in chlorine slows my weight loss down though so I try to swim in the salt water pool whenever possible. Also, if you're using lotions and such, the oils are being absorbed by your skin and slowing your weight loss down, so using lotions that are oil free is a good idea - there are a few (very few) of them out there at the health food stores.

I am fairly new to following the nutritional guidelines along with physical exercise. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "increase your intake, you are burning up muscle mass and not fat!"

Can you explain it a bit more for me please? I am really interested in learning about how exercise fits in with nutrition.

Thanks!
Debbie

Hi CHRISTINKC- try making your salads with some sweet ingredients, like dried cranberry or cherry. I really love poppy seed dressing on spinach salad with strawberry, banana or avocado. i throw in toasted almonds or hazelnuts when I want crunchy in there. Just watch the salad dressing. I can't do artificial sweetener, so I do the dip-fork-then-fork-salad method.

remember to always stretch before any exercise even something as "simple" as going for a walk.

Also alternating between cold and heat may help

Anybody have advice for the BEST thing to do for sore muscles. I've tried a heat pad but that only help slightly. I stretched after my walk today but I don't think it was enough.

There has never been nor will there ever be a person who is so broken that the Lord can not make them whole.

When I worked in the frozen veggie industry we gave most packaged products 1 year shelf life. Have actually done quality checks on some products at 1.5 and 2 years old, and as long as they have not gone through temperature abuse, they were good. Problem item is mushrooms because they have enzymes that keep aging them, even in the freezer, so you should not hold them more than 6 - 8 months. Problem is that home freezers are not very consistent in temperature control, lot of freeze and thaw can happen, so I would not recommend more than 1 year if unopened. Once you open them, put them through some freeze and thaw from use, the time is shortened to only a few months.
Please be aware of frozen peas that may have what looks like little 'blue berries' in the bag. These are nightshade berries which are weeds that grow amongst the pea vines. Any farmer knows that eating nightshade is poisonous. USDA regulations allow some nightshade in pea products based on old canning regulations which rightfully assumes the poison is denatured during the heat of canning. Frozen peas do not go through the high heat temperatures a can of peas go through so just pull those little 'blue berries' out of your frozen peas.

Yes, I was doing some sitting exercises, but I have severe arthritis so for now I must just do what I can and then sit and rest.

Then you have to follow your dr.'s orders to be safe and being safe is always first. Maybe ask him if you can do the sit and be fit exercises on the couch. Have you heard of them ?

You do all of them sitting down from wherever you're sitting, chair, couch, etc. Those are the ones I do sometimes when I'm not allowed to do much else. Just thought I'd pass this little tid bit along.

I am wanting to get some exercising in, but as soon as I get to feeling up to starting it, I either get sick, or hurt...and my doc tells me not to start.
Couch potato, but not by choice. So I am counting calories and (huff) following doc orders and taking it easy.

One of my challenges was to find out why I eat with any emotion, I've figured it out ! Not playing the blame game here it's useless to do that and I don't blame her at all but when I was growing up I was always, no matter what, rewarded with treats and going out to dinner was a treat, going out to eat any meal was a treat. And mom would always treat us when we did something good or we were sorry for doing something we weren't supposed to do. She too was raised this way and had a weight problem until we all grew up and left home. Then I believe she recognized what she had done to us and to herself and she stopped doing it to herself. But she did it to my kids which I had to stop. Man that wasn't easy at all. But I did manage to get her to stop it most of the time.

Growing up that way conditions us and we don't recognize it until it's to late, as was in my case. Now I have the power to change that. It's not going to be easy but I can do it.

So, I'm here to make sure that I check in each day to my sparks forums and post as much as possible, it keeps me focused.

I also joined Jenny Craig (JC) last January and it got me started. I was 358 when I joined JC and now I'm down to 306 so I've got the tools now and I'm using them. It works only if you work it. No I don't eat the food anymore, didn't like it to well. But I do MOMO's, meals on my own.

I watch every serving and each calorie that I put into my mouth I write down so that I can remember it and not go over my allowed intake on a daily basis, which helps the weight disappear emoticon

Another challenge I face is getting motivated or not I need to workout 30 min a day three days a week. I know I can do it, I'm capable of it. So it's the getting up off my behind to do it. I managed to do it once this week. Shooting for the 3 times mark next week. Good luck to us all and it's good to be here with all of you.

Oh Great Spirit who dwells in the sky, lead us to the path of peace and understanding. Our lives are so short here, walking upon Mother Earth's surface. Let our eyes be opened to all the blessings you have given us. Please hear our prayers, oh Great Spirit.

I am involved in a challenge right now, with a weight loss support group I attend. It maybe be helpful to everyone.

Cut 100 calories a day
and burn 100 calories a day

They say if you make that small change you will lose 12 pounds in 6 months.

some things I have done is :
~no pepperoni on my pizza and walked during all the
commercials of 1 movie
~craved potatoe chips so I got light instead of
regular and got my hand weights out and walked for
15 minutes in place.

I dont know it may help... :)

I know where Timonium is. Growing up we traveled to DC alot and I always saw the signs. Years ago I spent a weekend in Timonium also. I am on the west side of Coatesville, PA out in the country. We live in Amish country of PA and are just a couple miles from the Lancaster County line.

I'm in northern Balto Co (MD), but maybe we can just encourage each other by e-mail and meet once in a while! I began at 320.6 and am now 284.2...and want to lose exactly 1/2 of me! To get to 142, I'm going to need a lot of support, so thanks everybody for being here -- your stories are already making me feel better! s.a.

Where in PA? I live in western Chester County very near the Lancaster County line. I also started around 296 this past January. Had lost all but 30lbs till June and am now gaining some back. Would be great if you lived close by and we could encourage and motivate each other.

STOP: you don't want to eat if you're not hungry. before putting anything in your mouth ask why am i eating this. It helps to ask this question and then try to answer it. If you are hungry fine eat if bored don't. I am a fine one to be saying this because that sounds exactly like me. Good luck

Hi PATTYHALL571,
I am also on Easten coast. I live in PA, 45 and just starting at 296. That is great that you lost over 20 lb, since April. Keep up the great job. I personally as a newbie I went back to the basic, actual measuring my food and write it down first before eating it. Hope your a great day

Privattc -- try upping your calories for about three or four days. It will rev up your metabolism and you'll start losing again. I know this sounds contradictory, but it always works for me. Good luck.

Okay, so I can't find a digital scale anywhere around here, so I'm going by the weight from my last doctor's visit. I weighed 383 pounds, so that is what I'm going to base my progress on. I'll only weigh once a month, so I won't become a slave to the scale. I also had a friend do my measurements so I can tell if I'm losing inches and not pounds.

I'm going to weigh today, to get my starting weight since the last time I went to the doctor. I need to see what I've got to work with - like it or not.

Leslie Sansone's workout DVDs are awesome, especially when you get past the first week. Believe it or not, walking in place at the paces she gives you really works.

Anybody having a problem exercising in your feet. You might want to try exercising while siting down. Put in any exercise or music and move to it. Richard Simmons does have one called sit tight.
Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone. Michigan here. I have recently joined SparkPeople, my RD sent me here. WOW! What a wonderful site, full of motivation. I have to lose 105 pounds. I started in January by myself weighing in at 260. The doctor sent me to the RD and now I have a plan.

Okay, here is my challenge. The plan is 1400 - 1600 calories, 125-192g carbs, 30g fat, 45g protein. My problem is I am consistantly low on calories and fat but over in carbs.

Let me tell you, I don't eat red meat, only chicken and turkey. I am supposed to get starches at every meal. . . . but then come the carbs. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am a really picky eater -- they are telling me that my body was in starvation mode. To the point my liver and kidneys were failing and I am anemic. I can't believe how much they are making me eat. I hate food!!! I would rather not eat, but I'm learning that I need food to live and to be able to exercise the way I've become addicted to I need to eat more.

I can't believed I weight 260 mostly because I was starving myself. But, when I did eat, I ate a BU
NCH of carbs. I guess that's where I go wrong.

Oh yeah, I also don't like sweets! Wouldn't eat solid chocolate if you made me. So my problem is more eating vegetables and fruits more and less bread and tostioes. Well, now my scoops are baked. =)

Sorry, I ramble on. . . please help me on how to eat less carbs and not more fat. I'm lost.

You have to eat 1200 or more calories a day or your body goes into survival mode and you will be hungry and won't lose any weight. I am about 10 pounds litter and with my workout of at least 4 miles a day I eat between 1350-1500 calories per day. I do better at weight lose if I stay close to 1350 and eat the proper foods. Increase your intake, you are burning up muscle mass and not fat!!

Thanks for the encouragement, actually my clothes are fitting better, well truthfully they are not fitting at all they are getting too big. I put on a pair of size 14 jeans and could zip them the other day, haven't worn anything that small in a while. I didn't wear them out of the house because I felt like a sardine but at least I could get them on. I had a co-worker who told me the other day that if I kept losing wieght before too long I would be able to get a guy, I'm pretty sure that was meant to be a compliment although I wasn't very impressed wiht the delivery format. But anyway how long did it take before the scale started showing results again? I was discouraged today and ate a piece of cake. I only ate one but I haven't eaten any sweets since I started dieting and I feel pretty crappy about it tonight. Sweets are my downfall and I have been replacing them with strawberries becuase I think I'm addicted to sweets, but the cake didn't even taste that good and I felt all bloated afterwards so don't intend to take that route if I become discouraged again. how's your clothes fitting? sometimes you can stop when it comes to the scale but be losing inches. I was mad this month about only losing a few lbs. but pulled out the tape measure and guess what I lost alot of inches to my amazement. and was able to wear a pair of capri's that I haven't been able to wear in awhile. so when that happens pull out that tape measure. cause this wont be the first time this happens and not the last. but remember the tape measure can trully tell you what the scale wont.dont let the scale deter you from what you have accomplished so far. you've lost alot. be proud and know the rest will fall off as well. I'm no expert in this area I'm just going by what I'm personally going through myself. so dont rely on the scale go by how your clothes feel and keep that tape measure close !

Hi everyone this is a cry for help. I am losing weihgt and am down from 272 when I satrted in january to 232 right now but I cant seem to get any more weight dropped off. I am walking from 4 to 7 miles a day and am eating from 800 to 1200 calories a day so should be dropping weight like crazy but I just can't budge it. My little daily calorie differential thing is showing about 2000 calories a day difference but I'm not losing. I'm starving all the time and my legs feel like they are going to fall off from all the walking. I have also started biking although I hate it and probably won't do it too much. I'm doing some strength training in the form of throwing hay bales for about 30 minutes a day as well so don't know how to kick it up any more. please send suggestions to help me get things rolling again. thanks CP

My favorite excercise is walking. If not outside I enjoy doing the Leslie Sansone series.

Oh I'm sooooo glad you responded to me! So you like to swim, huh? I have been hoping to find someone that swims for exercise so I can see what they do for their workout. Would you please share your workout with me....how far, how many days per week, etc. Sometimes after an hour of Zumba I go to the pool and swim laps. I was going to be on a triathalon team and I was going to do the swimming leg of it (500 yards) but the cycler backed out so I'm not going to do it anymore. But I still like to go swim a 500 yd. workout. I look forward to your reply! Happy Swimming!!

Great job with the weight and inches lost with ZUMBA! Yes, I've done it before, and it is fun. I tend to go back to swimming. Been back in the water for a couple of weeks and have lost 15 pounds. I also have been adding some strength training and walking to the mix. Maybe I'll sign up for ZUMBA again! Thanks!

Hello! I love to ZUMBA! It's the best exercise I have ever done and enjoyed! You can check it out at zumba.com There are dvds you can order or look for a class at your local YMCA or other gym. When I started going in Feb. of this year I weighed 384 and I'm down to 338 so far. I have lost 8 inches off my waist and 8 inches off my hips just doing Zumba. emoticon It's basically dancing to Latin music....fun upbeat music!!!!! I usually burn over 1000 calories in an hour workout!
