I focus on making and sticking to my menu plan
I check calendar for household needs
I make sure my water bottles are filled for hydration

Very difficult to figure out what "I" need.

I think I will need to read more of the team posts to get inspired.

I like looking over my past posts. They are quite complete and the same struggles to do certain things are the same. This time around, instead of feeling bad about how little progress I have made on the same struggles, I am going to mention some positive things in my now and in my plans. My needs have changed a bit, because of staying home more due to COVID, so less time spent with my brother exercising and less work done on the farm because DD and her partner are doing most of it. Sob, that means the things I like a lot have been taken away and the things I should do and don't like to do are still looming. Okay, enough negativity.
Positive things now that I need - good, wholesome, unprocessed food ... regular, enough sleep
Positive plans - exercise plan for rehabbing metatarsalgia diagnosed by orthopedic foot specialist yesterday. I'm so glad it is an inflammation and not a neuroma. The plan is less walking and hiking, more biking, getting back into strength training. An 8 week plan until the foot heals, then gradual more walking, hiking and , something I am really looking forward to, slowly and gradually taking small steps, getting back into running again :) I haven't run for about 2 years. I love running.

I just re-read what I posted last time - how I feel that my deepest needs are kind of below the level of my conscious mind - but how I address a need, when it arises, is the key to self-care.

I couldn't have told you that I needed a cosy day today - but today I chose to put on a big cuddly hoodie which has given me the cosy, warm, safe feeling that I needed today.

On reflection, I think this might have come from the walk I did yesterday evening - I went out after tea, for a walk, to get my steps in. It was after dark, and it was a bit misty too - quite spooky! I didn't feel completely safe out there in the dark. At one point I came across two young lads who were messing about noisily with their scooters (ones that you scoot with your feet, like a skateboard) - and one of them actually fell over in the road when a car was coming, and he just laughed and stood there being silly. I guess, on reflection, they may have been under the influence of something. It kind of spooked me and made me walk a different way. I think that had been playing on my mind, about how I don't feel so safe in the dark now I'm older, and how, perhaps, I will change my plans so that I only go out during the day. And that reinforced the feeling of getting older. So perhaps, when I woke up this morning, I subconsciously wanted to wear clothes that made me feel warm and cosy and safe!

Who knows?

Some days my list is long. Other days it's kinda short. Just depends!

My 'consistent' list is:
1. Focus on my food plan for the day.
I can do this/accomplish this by planning and preparing ahead. It leads to less stress!

2. Drink plenty of water.
Get my cup ready on days that I work by filling it with ice before I leave the house. Without enough water I feel bloated and lately I've noticed I feel a little sluggish. This is one of my 'good habits.'

3. Make sure I get enough rest.
Without rest I'm cranky - and not just a little cranky. The older I get the more I need to make sure I rest enough. It's important for my body and for my frame of mind.

4. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies.
Good for my health and well being and they make me feel 'good and energetic.'

Some days I need to add things like: tune people out; turn the darn phone off!!; watch programs on television that I find relaxing; listen to my music, light a candle, say my prayers. The bottom line is I need to take care of me.

DAY #53 TAKING CARE OF NEEDS

As everyone's anxieties mount around the Covid-19 situation -

WHAT I NEED is to remain calm!

DH is off to breakfast and fishing with a friend this morning so it will be entirely up to me to meet my own needs.

HOW WILL I DO THIS -

1. I have stuck to my usual morning of routine - daily devotions & SP check-in
2. While I eat my breakfast I will plan my meals for the rest of the day and put them in writing which seems to cement my intentions a bit better than just saying or thinking the plan.
3. I will make sure I get outside for some fresh air and walking as my options for fitness facilities dwindle.

Day 53 Taking care of needs

• When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.
• For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”
• Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.

- I will get to bed on time = 10:30

PS. Although it seems like my morning is crazy busy, no wonder I crash after lunch, the fact is that even if I do nothing in the morning, I still crash after lunch, so I take advantage of my morning person personality to get a lot done in the morning.

I do need to figure out an early afternoon transition from lunch rest to activity

DAY #53 TAKING CARE OF NEEDS - ROUND 2

I looked at my list of needs that I had compiled over the past 2 lessons - Emotional Needs and The Food Fix. What my list boiled down to was two themes: 1. my life has been filled with chaos for months now; 2. I have not been feeling very loved lately. I did follow through on some of the action items I planned: 1. I finished cleaning my bathroom and vacuumed the bedroom carpets; 2. I spent 15 minutes relaxing on our backyard patio with DH (the weather was absolutely beautiful for the first time in we couldn't remember how long!). There were some more frustrations in my life before the day was over, but I managed to end on a calm note - yes, with food!

Today I thought I would put that old and long list aside and start the day with a new question. DH left early this morning for a golfing w/e with some buddies. Although I love the solitude and cleaner house, I always end up missing him. I thought my day was all planned, but things changed. It rained earlier than expected so I had to walk the dog in the rain and a GF that I was supposed to meet up with canceled. So - - -

WHAT DO I NEED TODAY?

1. Clean house - special care given to the cat litter pan, cleaned shoes that got dusty from seasonal pollens, extra care given to cleaning the kitchen, did a load of laundry, swept the front porch.

2. Eat healthy - light breakfast of strawberries w/ yogurt and granola sprinkles, pork chop & mango for lunch being mindful of fulness level, dinner is still up for grabs

3. Nurture self - getting caught up on some SP reading and emails, relaxing afternoon with a book and a short nap, walk the dog to a park, dinner tonight with a friend

DH knows that I have been really struggling lately and feeling depressed. Yesterday he made me laugh when he asked "Is there anything I can do to help?" and I half jokingly replied "Yes. Find me a new life where everything always goes smoothly!".

As much as I wish someone else would/could fix my life, ultimately I KNOW I have to do it myself. HOWEVER, it is always a bit easier with some help from a friend!

Day 53 - Taking care of needs

As much as you wish someone else would fix your life, ultimately you have to do it yourself. Even if you believe that your family or boss or lover should do more for you, other people can never fill all the gaps in your life. It’s up to you to figure out how to get your needs met.

Today

• When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.
• For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”

WHAT DO I NEED? HOW CAN I GET IT?
Eat healthier - Include more fruits and vegetables in menu plan
Feel better about my appearance - Hair appointment
Feel comfortable in my home - Clean my house
Need more rest since I feel tired - Take nap after lunch

• Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.

MY EAT HEALTHIER ACTION PLAN
Add more fruits and vegetables to my planned menu. Cut back on carbs. Take my vitamins. Have a healthy garden salad for dinner. Plan low calorie snacks. Drink my 8 glasses of water today.

I still find myself stuck in a "What do I need to DO?" mode of thinking, rather than "What do I need?"

I always have a list of things I'm planning to do - I have a Bullet Journal with daily things on it.

I know I make choices at a deeper level, but it's not very conscious. For example, last night I was disturbed by the upstairs neighbour, and I woke up feeling quite depressed. However, I decided to go through my morning routines and not miss anything - scrape my tongue, step on the scale, bathe my eyes with rosewater, drink water, do my exercises whilst the coffee is brewing, get dressed, massage my face with sweet almond oil. Spark. Yes, I did it all.

That was responding to a need to look after myself, hold myself together, be in control (in a positive way I think) and not allow circumstances to drag me down.

Then I decided to get an earlier bus than I'd planned - so that I could take a lovely ride through the countryside on the rural bus route, and then get a walk in before arriving at my friend's house.

That was responding to a need for some green healing and relaxation time, for soothing and refilling my emotional bucket - and for exercise to fulfil my need to stay fit and healthy, and strong.

But I couldn't have told you those were the needs I needed to meet this morning - they got met because the need came from a place below my thinking mind - but a place that informs my thinking mind.

Trust my intuition. This usually turns out well for me.

Another powerful lesson.

I do realize that I am responsible to take care of my own needs. I learned that long ago, but sometimes I get into a funk. Have myself a pity party. Comfort!! I do not need food to comfort me. Doesn't work anyway.

I need to take care of my physical well being. I do not want someone else to take care of me.

I am responsible for my happiness too. It's up to me to take care of that need. Bottom line. No one else can 'make' me happy. It's up to me to find out what makes me happy and do something about it.

Day #53 Taking care of needs
From today’s lesson — this was written for me!
As much as you wish someone else would fix your life, ultimately you have to do it yourself. Even if you believe that your family or boss or lover should do more for you, other people can never fill all the gaps in your life.

Wow this is the wake up statement I needed after what I was feeling yesterday.
It’s fear I’m feeling, of being caretaker as we age.
It’s fear of wondering who will care for me.
It’s fear of the future that is keeping me from enjoying today...how dumb is that!

“What do I need today?”

100 More DWL, Day 53 Taking care of needs

As much as you wish someone else would fix your life, ultimately you have to do it yourself. Even if you believe that your family or boss or lover should do more for you, other people can never fill all the gaps in your life. It’s up to you to figure out how to get your needs met.

Today

• When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.
• For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”
• Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.

What do I need today? Structure, planning, persistence, and consistency.

How can I get it? By writing out my nutritional plan, staying with foods that are comfortable and nutritious and moving my body.

Today I exercised before I got out of bed. That helped. After I went to the bathroom, I returned to sit on the edge of the bed and gently work the snarls out of my long hair. It's almost time to cut it for Locks for Love. It's longer than my arms can reach and getting harder to manage. Then I smoothed 100% Aloe Vera Gel on multiple places on my body. This is the first thing I have found that helps my psoriasis. Yay! I put coconut oil (antibiotic properties) on a cotton ball and put it into my left ear which is infected. I had a cup of decaf with my antibiotic. Ugh! I hate the way the medicine makes my insides feel, but it's necessary right now.

I gave myself my B-12 injection for the week and disposed of the syringe in the 'Sharps' container that I deliver to the pharmacy a couple of times a year. I also took my prescription 50,000 IU of Vitamin D that I must take for my SLE (Lupus). Later I drank my Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with 16 ounces of water.

I planned my menu including healthy snacks. I did some light weight household chores and my ear started really aching again so I lay down and used the new long lasting ice pack to strap around my head to relieve pain and swelling. I looked like one of the old-fashioned cartoons with a character who had an ice bag on her head for a headache. I took a couple of aspirin and Benadryl for help. I asked Hubby to please make a cup of tea for me. Later I'll ask him to make a cup of sugar-free apple cider. It helps soothe the swelling in my throat from the ear problem.

I know this lesson was about taking care of my needs, but I don't think there is anything wrong with asking for help when I need it. Even Miss Jasmine, our happy love-bug (French Mastiff/Boxer mix) knew I wasn't feeling up to par so she lay snuggled close to my right thigh while I typed on the laptop. She's a joy in my life.

I cleared out my email box and played a couple of computer games to relax. Then I played a word game and did an online jigsaw puzzle. I'll make a copy of my new Mazes book after I change the cartridges in the printer so I can do the same maze several times. I do hope the cartridge was the only problem. Otherwise, I'll have to return any unused cartridges.

I feel more vulnerable when I'm having a Lupus flare. That's when I'll ask Hubby for more help. I'm blessed that he is an awesome caregiver. I know the responsibility lies with me, but if he's willing, I'll absorb the love he shares by caring for me. It would be far too easy to revert back to old habits of comforting myself with food, but I'm on a good stretch since last November and want to have the next ten weeks of eating clean to see how much I can accomplish in the year's time. Right now I'm down 43 pounds. Hooray. Progress. Removing weight is one way of taking care of my needs.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

When all else fails, persistence prevails.

Injoy:) Carolyn

Day #53 Taking Care Of Needs

As much as I frequently feel crunched for time, getting my lessons done here are important enough for me to put them at the top of my list even when it means giving something else up.

• When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.
• For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”
• Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.

One of the things I think I might need to do is to be very careful about making my needs read like my "To Do" list. This list is never ending and I could fill this post up endlessly with the things that need to get done. At the top of this list are:

1. Attend Garden Club meeting
2. Wash my hair
3. Contact landscaping company and arrange for delivery of evergreens
4. Make copies of financial documents for my dad's new apartment
5. Today is ST on my fitness schedule
6. Meal planning for the week
7. Grocery shopping
8. Scrapbooking project
9. Put paint samples on the wall
10. COZI cleaning
11. Laundry
12. Overdue email and letter writing to friends
13. Pet Sitting arrangements for upcoming vacation

See what I mean! I could go on and on, but these are all things for OTHERS and not for ME!

I like the idea of asking WHAT DO I NEED TODAY? It is a question that is similar to the one I try to ask myself about food - WHAT ARE MY FOOD CHALLENGES TODAY?

Today I NEED TO STAY CALM AND FOCUSED SO THAT I WILL EAT HEALTHY.

How to I get this? When I am feeling overwhelmed by my "To Do" list I prioritize what needs to be done and then I start checking off one item at a time. Right now I need:

1. Eat breakfast
2. Shower, wash hair, get dressed for the day
3. Get to Garden Club meeting by 11 a.m.
4. Contact Landscaping company
5. GET OFF THIS COMPUTER!

I'm not sorry about how today went -- but it would have most likely been better had I asked myself the question of what I needed for myself and when I would fit it in. Instead, I got started on a looming project right after coffee -- without having breakfast or even getting dressed. I kept meaning to stop and grab a yogurt and wash my face, comb my hair -- but kept on doing "just one more thing." I got some good work done, but was thirsty and light headed by the time lunch rolled around. I didn't overeat, which is good....and I got some more done in the afternoon before dressing and leaving for the Y afternoon classes on my schedule. It was thundering as I was pulling out of the drive, and I felt apprehensive about leaving the dogs in their yard. They both get very nervous with the thunder. I've never done this before, but I drove all the way into town, and then turned right around without going to the Y and came home. It was in part for the sake of the dogs. It was pouring rain, and the dogs were so glad to see me. They were both drenched, even though they have good covered shelter. I'm OK about missing my workout -- it doesn't happen very often. But...I think if I had eaten breakfast and tended to my needs better that I would have found it less easy to talk myself out of going to class. DH got home soon after I did, and the dogs would have only had to wait a few more minutes.

When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.

Each day I do best when I write out and organize my day with a to do list which includes planned exercise, healthy food prep and other tasks that need to be done. I want and need continued connection with friends. I need a loose plan today for yoga class tonight and to get extra watering done outside with our ongoing heat wave. I need to interact with family members~hopefully done with their cooperation and minimal friction. Beyond that I find I need daily spiritual connection.

For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”

An early start helps with the watering already done and the to do list loosely written. Knowing what will be for dinner and prepping before class so it's mostly ready when I come home hungry. At DH's suggestion, I have 3 basic yoga class plans to choose from. In the afternoon I can easily go over the poses and add to or vary the routine.

Thanks to prior Spangle lessons, many of your responses specifically Cat's recommendation of the song "This is Amazing Grace" (playing on my computer now) and my prayer/walking friend I have recently begun incorporating many uplifting practices. It's unbelievable how much a daily devotional, prayers of gratitude/needs and joyful, healing, uplifting music has added to my peace of mind and relaxation. Interactions with family are better and I am reconnecting slowly with friends.

Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.

Hanging for as long as I can remember in my bathroom is a hand made heart plaque that says, "A day hemmed in Prayer seldom unravels."

I tend to rush through things until I am exhausted and leave little time for prayers of gratitude and the needs of friends, family and myself. I have set a timer to remind me to stop before this happens and to take time to prayerfully meditate and lift up these many needs and also of gratitude for many answered prayers and for so many blessings. Maybe I can learn to use my cozy, comfy couch for better things than TV and snacking. :)

1) exercise and fresh air
- how can I get it? by going out for a walk
2) to eat well
- how can I get it? by making my soup and salad jar as planned
3) to be heard by the neighbourhood manager
- how can I get it? by being assertive when he comes to visit me
4) to keep my eating under control
- how can I get it? by sticking to my menu plan and eating enough at each meal

I met 3 out of 4 needs already today - I went for a walk this morning, made my soup and salad bowl, and felt heard by the neighbourhood manager. I am planing to stick to my menu plan.

My chosen thing is #2 to eat well. Because this morning I got up later than usual, and then felt I didn't have time to make the soup I'd planned to make - so changed my plan to 'cheese on toast'. I also wondered whether to just pack cheese and crackers for my tea at work.

However - after my walk this morning, I decided NOT to come on Spark, but to get my soup going - which I did! And so I had a healthy, delicious summer minestrone soup for lunch. I also made a lovely salad jar to take to work. Making the decision to use my time differently meant that my need to eat well was met.

5) to get to work

Later: all my needs were met, and doing this exercise helped me stay away from the kitchen when I got home at 22.15hr.

Taking care of my needs

My greatest need today is motivation. Yesterday I must have had a sign on my back that said ....tell me your problems. I met two friends at different times and listened to what was on their minds and decided that I supposed to be there for them. Some days you are the sounding board, and that’s ok.

So my needs today are getting my groove back and making great choices for me. I think I’ll take a long walk alone and spend the day with my dogs......they always make me smile.

Have a healthy happy day!

One day at a time!

As I continue with plans for the weekend I am so very grateful for a dear friend who said, “I’ll help you” and finally in my older-age wisdom, I will gratefully accept her help tomorrow!

Day 53 Taking care of needs

As much as you wish someone else would fix your life, ultimately you have to do it yourself. Even if you believe that your family or boss or lover should do more for you, other people can never fill all the gaps in your life. It’s up to you to figure out how to get your needs met.

Today

• When you wake up each morning, ask yourself “What do I need today?” Record several things.
• For each item, write an answer to the question, “How can I get it?”
• Choose one need, then make an action plan for working on it today.
