@DESERTJULZ

That's great that the strength training/weight lifting improved the bone density as desired. I'd hoped to avert osteoporosis myself with strength training/weight lifting; but, it was not to be. Even the high-end calcium & strontium supplements did not prevent the osteoporosis diagnosis.

I'm hoping that the efforts underway with the clinical nutritionist might help turn the tide on the bone building front. Despite the osteoporosis diagnosis, I'm not living with a dowager's hump like my late grandmother. So, perhaps the strength training/weight lifting and supplementation have done some good.

If it was the Weight Grapher app that you used and you can remember your sign in information, your data can be exported.

I keep my own excel worksheets too. Next month will mark 8 years since I began actively addressing the stress with walking and it will be 7 years of maintenance. It has taken time for me to learn and sort this stuff out. I'm really curious to see what my body is going to do when we (assuming we can and will) stabilize the thyroid.

@JEANKNEE

Interesting discussion and I appreciate the insight in @4A-HEALTHY-BMI's blog.

My focus on attempting to stay in range is more of a competitive issue than a belief it is health related. I let go of the focus on range in this last challenge, as I was getting so close to ultimate goal I didn't want to stifle progress for the sake of competition. Still, having been part of this group for somewhere between 8-9 years, I've found staying in range helps me focus on true maintenance. Last year or two, I found myself adjusting the range up with each new challenge. Made up for it the last 7 months or more by adjusting range down a bit with each new challenge!

I just took a look at my longer-term average (since October 2018, when I switched off an online tracking platform and made my Excel sheet). The average over the 2.5 years is around 119, which honestly is a little high for my small frame. I know when I originally joined this group, my average was somewhere near 104-105, but that turned out to be too low.

Having focused on strength training/weight lifting in an attempt to circumvent osteoporosis, I have put on more muscle (though not a lot), and 109-110 is a better choice. And yes, BTW, the weight training is doing what I wanted it to do. Two years in, I retested bone density and my hips/legs were +12% while spine was +1 or +2%. Prior to strength training, the best I had accomplished was stopping loss with walking & high-end calcium & strontium supplements.

So yes, a focus on longer term is likely appropriate, though right now, my longer term chart isn't long enough to incorporate the lower numbers which are now lost to me on a free online tracker. Weightgrapher, I believe, though it might have been a different site.

There truly is so much to consider in arriving at the appropriate numbers. Focus on health should always be #1, and, as 4A-Healthy-BMI's blog mentioned, unplanned weight changes can certainly point to an underlying health issue!

If the energy is there, I will get myself to the lab for the blood draw to recheck the thyroid and copper as well as another cancer check and allergy testing.

With the last weigh-in for this challenge, I see that this is the first challenge since fall 2019 where the challenge average has not continued the unrelenting upward trend. So, I have to wonder, is thyroid function stabilizing? Physically, it doesn't feel like it. There are still too many physical signs that thyroid function has not stabilized. However, having been through this nearly 30 years ago, I know that physical signs of improvement lag the underlying indications in the blood. So, we shall see what the blood work shows when I can manage a trip to the lab.

Here's a graph of my challenge averages (blue line) versus the long term average of these challenge averages (red line):

Something you shared really spoke to my initial experience as a maintainer: "As for changing the goal weights for our challenges in this group while working my weight back down: I quite like staying in my set range."

It was very unsettling for me to fall out of range as an early maintainer even though I was falling out of range to the downside which so many seem to view as a "good thing". Once it became clear to me that I had underlying health issues that were impacting the weight, I decided that taking a step back and looking at the long term trending over years would likely serve me better.

I believe it was early 2020 when I started chosing a goal/center/target weight based on the long term challenge average (July 2014 - present). With the Star Wars challenge coming to a close, I am completing my 39th maintenance challenge. Relative to the long term average of the challenge averages, I have been out of range 31 of 39 times which makes sense given that I am ill and have been contending with health challenges unbeknownst to me for some time.

For me, learning about routine, healthy weight fluctuations and getting a sense of my body's routine fluctuations has been fabulous. The weight fluctuations have come to be a sort of early warning system that health challenges may be afoot.

and a chapter regarding fluid function in Byron Richards & Mary Richards book, Mastering Leptin have played an instrumental part in me gaining this understanding.

@JEANKNEE

I'm not sure if you're asking how I determined the amount by which to lower my goal or how I took off the little bit of unwanted weight I let creep on! So maybe a bit about both and you can ask questions. :-D

How I track: I weigh myself every morning before ingesting even water. Typically, I weigh in the nude, as this way the nominal weight of what I'm wearing doesn't change from day to day. I then track the weight in an Excel spreadsheet with columns for day, date, weight, 7-day average (calculated in Excel), and % body fat (my scale calculates this number). I don't track the % body fat daily, I just drop it on the sheet every once in a while, so I get the general idea of where it is falling/trending.

If the 7-day average is trending up or down, then I decide whether I'm going to let it slide, or take action to change the trend. Typically, day-to-day changes don't phase me, I focus on the 7-day trend. Over the pandemic, I truly let it slide and my average trended way up until I was in the 120s. It finally hit a point where I couldn't justify letting it slide any more, so I took actions to modify my intake to get it under control.

What I did to get the 7-day trending down: 1) No alcohol. Although I'm not a big drinker, I would typically have 1-3 drinks a week. Eliminating the empty calories was step 1. 2) Cut out the treats. I love dark chocolate and had gotten in the habit of having a very small piece of dark chocolate caramel every afternoon. 100 calories a day isn't much, but on a weekly basis, it was an extra 700. 3) More veggies, less pasta, rice, bread. Salad for lunch almost every single day, with homemade vinaigrette dressing. Must watch dressing choices, as some totally ruin the low calorie benefit of filling up on raw veggies. 4) Stepped it up when my weight wasn't changing fast enough to make me happy, by adding in concentrated whole herbal foods and a high end vegan protein powder. Several days a week, I would have a small protein smoothie for both breakfast and dinner. If my stomach started growling from being rather empty, I'd just have something very small, like a veggie snack, or a scoop of the protein powder stirred into unsweetened almond milk.

As for changing the goal weights for our challenges in this group while working my weight back down: I quite like staying in my set range. In an attempt to accomplish staying in range, while still slowly losing unwanted weight, I'd take a look at the trend on my 7-day average and pick the lowest number for my new goal when a new challenge started. Most of the time, I could still manage to be in the range; however for the Star Wars, the weight loss was trending perfectly to hit my ultimate goal soon, and I let it drop me out of the challenge for the last two weeks.

My new challenge is to stabilize now, instead of the slow trending down, as I've gotten to the weight which feels healthy and right for me.

Edit to add: I also do exercise regularly. Weight-training 3x a week for around 20-30 minutes, and daily quick-paced walks with the dogs for 15-30 minutes. Because I am still working full-time, I tend to take the shorter walks on the days I'm lifting weights and the longest walks are on the weekends.

I had a virtual appt with my GP yesterday, she says I'm undernourished, but need to get the underlying disease under control to reverse the problem. I have an appointment next Tuesday (at last!) with the GI doc, hopefully he'll have a better idea of what to do.

@SLASALLE

You're very welcome. Happy to hear that my help and encouragement has supported you. emoticon

Thank you for your well wishes. I am having decent days. I am doing a better job of learning to live within the body's limitations, while not discarding hope for improvement despite being repeatedly reminded (as recently as last week) by the medical care team that improvement is an unrealistic expectation. Last week I was reminded that I will likely not be able to manage sitting all day again.

So, the disease has taken me off my feet and taken away my capacity to sit for extended periods of time without suffering serious consequences.

It is what it is and I'm finding it kind of hard to describe my mental/emotional state. It's a tenuous sort of balance between acceptance and hope.

Let me think a bit on the thoughts as how to best atempt the lowered goal. I know Julia (DESERTJULZ) has been doing an excellent job stepping her goal weight down.

@DESERTJULZ (Julia), Any thoughts to share with @SLASALLE

@JEANKNEE -

Thanks so much. Your help and encouragement certainly aided me in getting there! AND, of course, now I'm considering lowering my goal weight 5 pounds after discussing with my doc yesterday.

Trying to decide how best to attempt that. If you have thoughts, I'd be interested!

Hope you're having some decent days, my friend!

Below range for this challenge for the last two entries; however, this puts me near the mid-point of my current goal weight. Now, I do need to modify my habits, as intention is to stabilize right about where I am. I'm a petite, small boned person and it seems 108 to 111 is about right for me.

Center Weight 115 +/- 3% (range: 111.6 to 118.4)

I use a number of numerical tools: excel spread sheet, Hacker's Diet Online, Weight Grapher and google sheets.

The trend weight shared above is the Hacker's Diet Online trend weight. The Weight Grapher application generates trend weights to the hundreth's place. For the past 7 days that trend has held within 0.15 lbs. which is an incredibly tight trend weight fluctuation for me. Curious to see how long the trend will remain that tight.

I am using the Hacker's Diet Online ("How to lose weight and hair through stress and poor nutrition," and not to be confused with the myriad other Hacker's Diet websites) website to calculate my trending weight. I will use the reading for the Sunday of each week as the official weight for this challenge, regardless the day I post or how many times or what days I weigh myself during the week.

Target weight: 131 (range: 127.07-134.93)

Week 3 : Wed 04/07/2021 - Tue 04/13/2021 (Sun 04/11/2021): 132.7
Week 4 : Wed 04/14/2021 - Tue 04/20/2021 (Sun 04/18/2021): 132.6

The push to the upside that began late Mach/early April with the instituted nutritional changes under the clinical nutritionist's guidance appears to be leveling off.

The trend graph for the past 3 months looks like a V.

Happy to see the gain occurring Nell and great news from the nurse indicating this could very well be a good sign that the drug is doing its intended job. Hope you're feeling a bit better day by day.

Oh, Julia, emoticon

I'm like you with things like the house flooding not phasing me much. Sorry for the inconvenience. Delighted you're covered with excellent home owners insurance and have savings available to make the desired upgrades and will be moving into a nicer home than you left,

So, so sorry to hear Rio has left you. Yes, making the decision to help them leave us is difficult. emoticon

With this week's post, I fall out of the challenge for being below the low end of my range. This is quite intentional on my part, as my ultimate desire is for my midpoint to be in the 109-110 pounds range.

Center Weight 115 +/- 3% (range: 111.6 to 118.4)

Week 1: Wed 03/24/2021 - Tue 03/30/2021: 115.6
Week 2: Wed 03/31/2021 - Tue 04/06/2021: 115.1
Week 3: Wed 04/07/2021 - Tue 04/13/2021: 114.2
Week 4: Wed 04/14/2021 - Tue 04/20/2021: 113.3
Week 5: Wed 04/21/2021 - Tue 04/27/2021: 112.8
Week 6: Wed 04/28/2021 - Tue 05/04/2021: 112.5
Week 7: Wed 05/05/2021 - Tue 05/11/2021: 111.7
Week 8: Wed 05/12/2021 - Tue 05/18/2021: 110.8
Week 9: Wed 05/19/2021 - Tue 05/25/2021

It's been a rough couple of weeks in day-to-day life. Two and a half weeks ago, I came home from work to a flooded home. The hot water supply line under my kitchen sink failed (not at a connector). The plumber thinks it was likely spraying water into my house for 5-6 hours. Only one room went unscathed. I'm now out and in a short-term rental house while the damaged walls, floors and cabinets are removed and replaced. Thankful for excellent homeowner's insurance! This kind of thing doesn't phase me much. It's a hassle, but you just take it one step at a time and it goes fine. In the end, I'll be moving into a nicer home than I left, since I'll kick in a bit of my savings to upgrade some of the replacements.

But wait, that wasn't enough. The universe also decided it was time for my oldest greyhound to die. She was my heart hound. Rio had reached 14 years & 9 months old. Life expectancy is typically 12-13 for her breed, so well beyond expectation. She'd been in decline for a few years, but still feeling good. She shattered a leg the first day in the rental and the x-rays showed she had un-diagnosed bone cancer. Cancerous bones won't heal, the only option would have been amputation; however at her age, an intensive severe surgery wasn't really an option, so we made the difficult decision to help her peacefully leave us.

Up a little. The nurse doing my infusion yesterday told me that even the slightest weight gain can mean that the drug is starting to work, and to be patient.
